Body Control Module (BCM) Communication Error

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Blown fuse or loss of BCM power/ground
  • Damaged or corroded BCM connector or wiring harness
  • Open or short on the communication bus (CAN or LIN)
  • Missing or incorrect bus termination (open/shorted resistor)
  • Other control module fault pulling network down
  • Software/firmware mismatch or configuration error after module replacement

Symptoms

  • Instrument cluster shows multiple communication warnings or blank displays
  • Some body functions inoperative (lights, locks, wipers, etc.)
  • Multiple modules report ‘lost communication’ or do not appear on scanner
  • Intermittent operation of body systems correlated to vehicle motion or moisture
  • Stored B/U or U-codes related to lost communication

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs from all modules; check freeze-frame and occurrence counters
  • Verify battery voltage while key on and cranking (should be ~11–14 V)
  • Visually inspect BCM connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, or water ingress
  • Check fuses and fusible links supplying the BCM and related networks
  • Scan the bus: confirm BCM module present and responding to scan tool requests
  • Check for aftermarket devices or alarm systems connected to the body network and disconnect if present

Signal parameters

  • CAN (typical): recessive idle — CAN_H ≈2.5 V, CAN_L ≈2.5 V; dominant — CAN_H ≈3.5 V and CAN_L ≈1.5 V (differential ≈2.0 V)
  • Typical CAN differential on active frames ~1–3 V depending on transceiver/design
  • CAN bus termination: total loop ≈60 Ω (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel)
  • LIN: idle pulled to battery (~VBAT ≈ 12 V); active transmissions are low pulses to near 0 V
  • Expected bus traffic: BCM should transmit periodic heartbeat/status messages; check message IDs and update rate with a capable scanner or CAN/LIN analyzer

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and read all modules; note all communication-related codes and which modules are missing.
  2. Verify vehicle battery health and main power/ground to BCM. Check relevant fuses and continuity to BCM Vbatt and ground pins.
  3. Visually inspect and wiggle BCM connector and wiring harness while monitoring scanner for changes; repair any damaged wiring or pins.
  4. With ignition ON, measure supply voltage at BCM power pins and ground resistance to chassis. Repair if out of range.
  5. Use a CAN/LIN capable scope or bus analyzer to observe bus traffic at the BCM connector: confirm recessive/dominant voltages, presence of periodic messages and absence of bus errors or continuous dominant state.
  6. Check termination resistance across CAN_H/CAN_L (vehicle OFF). Replace missing/incorrect termination resistors.
  7. If bus shows heavy error frames or a node in bus-off, isolate by disconnecting suspect modules or sections until traffic returns to normal; identify the faulty node.
  8. Inspect for corrosion or water intrusion at BCM and nearby components; repair and reseal as required.
  9. If wiring, power and bus integrity are good and BCM does not respond, verify software calibration and programming status; check for available updates or TSBs.
  10. Replace BCM only after confirming fault is internal; program/configure replacement module and recheck network operation and DTCs.

Likely causes

  • Failed BCM power or ground circuit (fuse, harness, ground stud)
  • Corroded/moisture-damaged BCM connector pins
  • Short between CAN_H and CAN_L or to battery/ground near BCM
  • Faulty node (another module) flooding the bus or causing bus-off state
  • Missing 120Ω termination at one or both ends of a CAN subnetwork

Fault status

⚠️ Status
BCM not communicating on vehicle data bus (CAN/LIN). Module missing or intermittent on network; power, wiring, termination, or neighbouring module may be causing failure.
