Causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty relay in the parklamp circuit
  • Failed or corroded lamp bulb(s) or sockets
  • Damaged, chafed or corroded wiring or connectors in the parklamp request circuit
  • Short to battery or short to ground on the request circuit
  • Poor or missing ground(s)
  • Faulty parklamp switch or multifunction switch

Symptoms

  • Park/parking lamps do not turn on when selected
  • Park lamps remain on and cannot be turned off
  • Park lamps flicker or operate intermittently
  • Instrument cluster or body control messages related to lamp circuit
  • Other exterior lighting may be affected depending on vehicle wiring

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read DTCs and monitor parklamp request status/bit from the BCM
  • Visually inspect bulbs, sockets and exterior lamp connectors for corrosion or damage
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Perform visual and tug test on harnesses and connectors for loose pins or corrosion
  • Measure voltage at the parklamp connector with switch ON and OFF
  • Disconnect lamp loads and re-test circuit to isolate short or overload

Signal parameters

  • Parklamp request command is a BCM output — when active the circuit should indicate battery voltage (~11–14 V) for a high-side output or near 0 V for a low-side (ground) output depending on vehicle design
  • Inactive state: open/float or opposite voltage level to active state (vehicle-specific)
  • Measured current depends on lamp type — incandescent bulbs draw multiple amps each; LEDs draw much less. Compare measured current to factory specifications
  • Continuity: wiring between BCM and lamp connector should show low resistance with bulbs connected/removed per service procedure; high resistance or open indicates wiring/connector problem

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the code with a scan tool and note freeze frame / current state. Clear codes and attempt to re-create fault by operating parklamps.
  2. Verify basic items: check parklamp fuses and relays, inspect bulbs and sockets for corrosion or shorted filaments, and remove any aftermarket lamp connections.
  3. With switch OFF and vehicle in a safe state, visually inspect wiring and connectors from BCM to front/rear parklamp connectors. Look for pin damage, corrosion, crushed wires, or evidence of shorting.
  4. Use a multimeter: backprobe the BCM parklamp output connector. Operate the parklamp switch and observe the output voltage. Compare to expected (battery voltage when active for high-side, ~0 V for low-side).
  5. Disconnect the parklamp load (bulbs) and check if the code clears or the output behaves normally. If removal cures the fault, inspect bulbs/sockets and wiring for short or excessive current draw.
  6. Check for short to battery/ground: with circuit disconnected from BCM, measure resistance to ground and to battery positive to identify unwanted shorts.
  7. Wiggle test the harness while monitoring the circuit and scan tool to identify intermittent faults. Repair broken wires, replace corroded connectors or sockets as found.
  8. If wiring and loads test good, verify BCM grounds and power feeds. If BCM output remains abnormal with known-good wiring and load removed, consider BCM internal fault and follow manufacturer procedures for BCM repair/replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and re-test all functions to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Open or short in wiring between BCM and lamp assemblies or switch
  • Corroded/loose connector at lamp or BCM
  • Failed lamp filament causing abnormal current signature
  • Faulty relay or blown fuse protecting the circuit
  • Defective BCM output driver

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the Body Control Module detects an abnormal condition (open, short, high resistance or intermittent) on the parklamps request circuit. The BCM has flagged the request signal as out of expected parameters.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
