Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in charger B power or ground circuits
  • Corroded or loose connector at the charger module
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying charger B
  • Internal failure in the charger B module (power electronics or control)
  • Temperature sensor or safety interlock open or out of range
  • Low main/high-voltage battery state prevents charging (safety inhibit)

Symptoms

  • Battery not charging from charger B or reduced charging rate
  • Charging system warning lamp or message displayed
  • Reduced vehicle functionality or entry into limited-charge mode
  • Unusual charger noises or overheating at the charger module
  • Unexpected fuse or relay failures related to charging circuit

What to check

  • Check for any other stored codes (powertrain, body, hybrid/EV control modules) with a scan tool and record freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect charger B, connectors and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, loose pins or water intrusion
  • Verify fuses and relays for charger B; inspect for blown elements and proper relay operation
  • Measure supply voltage at charger B power input with key on and engine/vehicle in appropriate state
  • Measure charger B ground continuity back to chassis/ground point
  • Check for CAN/LIN communication between charger and control module (no bus errors, valid messages)

Signal parameters

  • Charger B supply voltage present at module connector (key on / charge request): specified battery system voltage (12 V supply present)
  • Charger B enable/control signal: present (digital/PWM) when charge request issued by vehicle control
  • Charger B output voltage/current: within manufacturer spec when charging (for 12 V systems ~12–14.8 V; for HV chargers see vehicle-specific HV pack voltage/current ranges)
  • Temperature sensor values within expected range and not reporting fault
  • CAN/LIN messages from charger module: present and valid (no checksum or timeout errors)
  • Ground resistance: low (near 0 Ω) between charger ground terminal and chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow manufacturer high-voltage and battery-safe procedures before inspecting or working on chargers; isolate high-voltage system if applicable
  2. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all related DTCs and live data. Note when the code sets and any freeze-frame values
  3. Perform a visual inspection of charger B and associated wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, moisture, or rodent damage
  4. Verify fuses and charging relays feeding charger B. Replace any blown fuses and bench-test relays if suspect
  5. With vehicle in state that would enable charging, measure supply voltage at the charger B power input and verify ground continuity. Repair wiring or connectors if voltages are absent or grounds are high resistance
  6. If supply and ground are good, verify control/enable signal and CAN/LIN communication to the charger. Repair bus wiring or module terminations as needed
  7. If communications and control signals are present but charger does not operate, perform module-level self-tests (if available) and check for internal fault codes in charger module
  8. If internal charger fault is confirmed and wiring/inputs are correct, replace or repair the charger B module per manufacturer procedure
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform a charge cycle and road test to confirm the fault does not return and verify proper charging behavior

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector or damaged wiring to charger B
  • Blown fuse or failed charger supply relay
  • Internal charger B module fault
  • Intermittent communication error on vehicle network

Fault status

⚠️ Status
