Causes

  • Failed left front wheel speed sensor (open or shorted)
  • Damaged or corroded sensor connector
  • Broken, pinched or shorted wiring between sensor and ABS module
  • Damaged or missing tone ring/reluctor (cracked, chipped, missing teeth)
  • Sensor air gap out of specification or contaminated sensor face
  • Poor ground or power/reference supply to an active sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction control / ESC warning or disabled message
  • Possible ABS activation not available during hard braking
  • Cruise control may be disabled
  • Speedometer may behave erratically (depends on system)
  • Diagnostic trouble code C0035 stored in ABS module

What to check

  • Read and record stored ABS/ESP codes with a scan tool; note freeze frame/live data
  • Visually inspect the left front sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or disconnection
  • Check for missing or damaged tone ring/reluctor on hub or axle
  • Access live wheel speed data while rotating wheel (scan tool) and compare to other wheels
  • Measure sensor resistance with multimeter (power off) and compare to spec
  • Check AC output (for passive VR sensors) or digital/square wave (for active sensors) while spinning the wheel

Signal parameters

  • Passive (VR) sensor: produces AC voltage that increases with wheel speed; small or no voltage at rest. Typical low-speed output is roughly 0.1–1.5 Vrms (varies by design).
  • Active (Hall/electronic) sensor: square/pulse signal referenced to vehicle supply (often 5 V or vehicle battery) with 0–5 V or 0–12 V swings depending on design.
  • Resistance (passive VR) typically in the few hundred to low thousands of ohms (commonly ~800–1500 Ω) — consult vehicle spec.
  • Frequency (or pulse rate) increases proportionally with wheel RPM; signals should be consistent and similar in shape to other wheels under the same conditions.
  • No continuity, constant low/high short to supply/ground, or erratic/noisy waveform indicates a fault.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool, read C0035 and any related codes, view live wheel speed values and freeze frame data.
  2. Visually inspect left front wheel area: sensor mounting, wiring harness routing, connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or moisture.
  3. With ignition off, disconnect the sensor connector and measure sensor resistance between its signal and ground terminals; compare to service spec. If open/short, suspect sensor.
  4. If passive sensor, spin the wheel by hand and measure AC voltage between the sensor leads with AC range on meter. For active sensors, backprobe and observe signal with oscilloscope or scan tool while spinning the wheel.
  5. Wiggle the harness and connector while watching live data or signal waveform to find intermittent faults caused by movement.
  6. Inspect the tone ring/reluctor for missing/chipped teeth, heavy rust, debris, or rotor damage; check sensor air gap and alignment to spec.
  7. Check for proper reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector (for powered sensors). Test continuity from the sensor connector to the ABS control module pins to rule out open/shorts.
  8. If wiring and connector are good but signal remains invalid, replace the sensor and re-test. If new sensor still fails and wiring/power are correct, suspect ABS module input fault and perform module-level diagnostics.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform a road test and re-scan to ensure code does not return and wheel speed readings are normal and consistent.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the left front wheel speed sensor
  • Open or short in the sensor harness (damage from road debris or steering motion)
  • Failed wheel speed sensor (common wear/failure item)
  • Damaged tone ring/reluctor on hub or driveshaft

Fault status

⚠️ Status
