ABS right front wheel speed sensor circuit malfunction

Causes

  • Damaged or contaminated right front wheel speed sensor
  • Broken, chafed, corroded or disconnected sensor wiring/connector
  • Faulty tone/reluctor ring (missing or damaged teeth) on the hub/axle
  • Poor ground or loss of reference/power to the sensor
  • Intermittent connector contact from corrosion or debris
  • Faulty ABS module or poor connection at the module

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • Traction control/stability control warning or disabled
  • ABS may not activate under heavy braking (reduced or no ABS function)
  • Unstable or incorrect wheel speed reading on scan tool for right front wheel (stuck at 0 or erratic)
  • Possible pulsation or noise from wheel area if tone ring damaged

What to check

  • Read and record all ABS codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool
  • Visually inspect right front sensor, connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, pin pull-out or exposed wires
  • Compare live wheel speed sensor data for all four wheels at key on and while spinning each wheel (jack and rotate)
  • Backprobe sensor connector and verify reference voltage, ground and signal while rotating the wheel
  • Measure sensor resistance (for passive/VR sensors) or check voltage supply and switching signal (for active/Hall sensors)
  • Inspect tone/reluctor ring for missing teeth, heavy corrosion, metal debris or physical damage

Signal parameters

  • Hall-effect (active) sensor: typically has a 5V reference and provides a digital/pulse signal that switches between ~0V and ~5V; frequency increases with wheel speed
  • Passive VR sensor: produces an AC sine voltage proportional to wheel speed (may be very low at low rpm); typical AC amplitude increases with speed (often 0.1–2+ Vrms depending on unit)
  • Typical resistance (passive VR) — varies by vehicle but commonly several hundred to a few thousand ohms (consult OEM spec before replacement)
  • Signal should be continuous and smooth when wheel is rotated; erratic, zero or shorted readings indicate a problem

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool and record C0128 and any related ABS/traction codes. Note freeze-frame and live wheel speed values.
  2. Visually inspect the right front wheel area: sensor, tone ring, wiring routing, connector and ABS module harness. Repair obvious damage first.
  3. With key on, backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (if active sensor), ground continuity, and signal behavior while spinning the wheel by hand or using a scan tool live graph.
  4. If passive (VR) sensor: unplug sensor and measure resistance across the sensor terminals. Compare to OEM spec. Also check AC output while spinning the wheel. If output is low/zero, replace sensor.
  5. If active (Hall) sensor: verify 5V reference and ground at connector. Check for a switching signal (0–5V) while spinning the wheel. If no reference or signal present, trace and repair wiring to module.
  6. Perform continuity and short-to-ground/power tests on harness between sensor connector and ABS module connector. Repair any opens/shorts.
  7. Inspect tone/reluctor ring for damage or missing teeth and correct spacing/gap between sensor and ring. Replace tone ring or hub assembly if required.
  8. If wiring and sensor test good, check ABS module connectors and grounds. If module communication or outputs are faulty, further module testing or replacement may be needed.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform a road or wheel spin test with a scan tool, and confirm right front wheel speed displays correctly and code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Open or short in sensor wiring between sensor and ABS module
  • Corroded/damaged sensor connector at the hub
  • Failed wheel speed sensor element (Hall or VR)
  • Damaged or contaminated tone ring (rust, debris, missing teeth)
  • Intermittent ground or supply reference to the sensor

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS fault stored: Right front wheel speed sensor circuit malfunction. ABS/traction control may be disabled for that wheel until the fault is corrected.
