Causes

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all stored related codes (ABS, ESC, airbag, power steering)
  • Use a scan tool to view steering angle sensor live data while turning the wheel; note if values change and return correctly
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals
  • Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring live data to reproduce the fault
  • Check for required ABS/ESC module updates, service bulletins, or required steering angle sensor calibration/relearn
  • Confirm proper battery voltage during tests (low voltage can cause false errors)

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply typically +5 V from ABS/ESC module (confirm vehicle spec)
  • Ground continuity between sensor housing/ground circuit and chassis ground
  • Signal output: analogue voltage typically varies across ~0.5–4.5 V with wheel angle OR digital/PWM/serial CAN messages depending on vehicle
  • Expected live-data behavior: smooth, continuous change in angle value as wheel is turned, returning to center after release
  • Resistance/continuity: check wiring continuity between sensor connector and module connector (ohms)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code and related codes; record freeze frame data.
  2. Inspect sensor and connector for visible damage, moisture, or corrosion; repair or clean as needed.
  3. Using a scan tool, observe live steering angle output while slowly turning the steering wheel; note if reading is erratic, stuck, or missing.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (typically 5 V) and ground with ignition ON; verify signal changes with wheel movement. If no reference or ground, trace wiring to module.
  5. Perform a wiggle/strain test of harness in steering column while monitoring live data to reproduce intermittent faults.
  6. If reference/ground present and signal is absent/invalid, measure sensor output with multimeter or oscilloscope; if sensor output is out of spec, replace sensor.
  7. Check continuity and insulation of harness between sensor and ABS/ESC module; repair any open/shorts and secure harness routing.
  8. If wiring and sensor check good, check module input circuit and CAN/communication lines for faults; test for bus errors (U-codes).
  9. After repair or sensor replacement, clear codes and perform steering angle sensor relearn/calibration procedure per vehicle service manual; verify proper operation and re-check for codes.
  10. If problem persists, consult manufacturer technical information and consider replacing or bench-testing the ABS/ESC control module.
