Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring to the affected sensor

  • Intermittent faults that clear or reappear with vibration/wheel movement

What to check

  • Read complete DTC list and freeze frame using a capable scan tool
  • Check for additional related codes (ABS, wheel speed, yaw, steering angle)
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Backprobe sensor connector and measure supply, signal and ground voltages
  • Perform wiggle test on harness and connectors while monitoring live data
  • Check relevant fuses, power feeds and ground points

Signal parameters

  • Sensor supply/reference voltage typically ~5 V (verify for vehicle)
  • Signal voltage range often 0–5 V or centered ~2.5 V for inertial sensors (yaw/roll)
  • Passive wheel speed sensors produce AC voltage proportional to wheel speed (frequency and amplitude vary)
  • Hall/active speed sensors output pulse/TTL or variable voltage proportional to speed
  • Connector pin resistance to ground typically
  • CAN/CAN High-Low differential signals ~2.5 V idle (if sensor reports via CAN gateway)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture all DTCs and freeze-frame data with a scan tool. Note occurrence conditions (speed, temp, etc.).
  2. Clear codes and perform a road or test-stand drive to attempt to re-create the fault while watching live data.
  3. Identify the specific sensor or circuit referenced by the freeze frame/related codes (wheel speed, yaw, steering angle, etc.).
  4. Visually inspect the sensor, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or water ingress. Repair as needed.
  5. Backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage, ground continuity, and signal output while operating the vehicle or spinning the wheel/sensor.
  6. If signal is missing or out of range, check continuity between the sensor connector and the chassis control module connector for opens/shorts; repair wiring faults.
  7. Wiggle the harness and connectors while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults.
  8. Swap with a known-good sensor (if available and compatible) to confirm sensor vs. wiring/module fault.
  9. If wiring and sensor check good, check module power/ground and replace module only after verifying module fault and following OEM replacement/programming procedures.
  10. After repair or replacement, reprogram/calibrate sensors/modules if required (steering angle, IMU, ABS/ESC calibration), clear codes and road-test to verify fix.

  • Corroded connector at sensor or module
  • Sensor internal failure (moisture, impact)
  • Broken solder joint or connector pin in module
  • Lost reference voltage or ground to the sensor
