Causes

  • Expected waveform: clean, consistent pulses or sinusoidal/AC on VR sensors; noisy, missing or intermittent pulses indicate fault.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code with an OEM-capable scan tool; record freeze frame and related codes; attempt a test drive to reproduce.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the wheel sensor, connector, wiring loom and tone ring for damage, corrosion, missing teeth or debris.
  3. With key ON (engine off), check for proper reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector (active sensors) and measure sensor resistance (passive sensors).
  4. Back-probe the signal wire and use a multimeter or oscilloscope while rotating the wheel by hand; verify a clean, continuous signal waveform.
  5. Wiggle the harness and connector while watching live speed and signal to identify intermittent wiring faults.
  6. If signal is weak or absent: remove sensor and inspect air gap and mounting; clean tone ring and sensor; measure again.
  7. Replace sensor if out of spec or mechanically damaged; recheck the signal and clear codes.
  8. If new sensor does not restore signal, trace wiring to the ABS module: check continuity, shorts to ground/12V and connector pins, repair any faults.
  9. Inspect wheel bearing/hub and tone ring alignment; replace damaged components as required.
  10. If wiring and sensors are good but fault persists, consider ABS control module diagnostics or reflashing per OEM procedures.
  11. Always support vehicle safely on jack stands when removing wheel or hub components and follow OEM torque/spec procedures.
