Causes

  • Broken or disconnected wiring harness to air dam actuator
  • Corroded or loose connector terminals at actuator or control module
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the actuator circuit
  • Failed air dam actuator (motor, gear or internal wiring open)
  • Faulty control module output driver
  • Water intrusion or physical damage in connector or harness

Symptoms

  • Air dam(s) do not deploy or stow when commanded
  • Aerodynamic performance affected (possible increased drag/fuel use)
  • DTC C0601 stored in vehicle control module
  • Possible dash message or warning related to air dam system
  • No movement or only partial movement of the dam when commanded

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and fault status with a scan tool
  • Attempt to command the air dam open/close using a scan tool and observe behavior
  • Visual inspection of actuator, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or water
  • Check related fuse(s) and relay(s) for continuity and operation
  • Backprobe actuator connector while commanding to measure voltage/ground
  • Perform continuity check between actuator connector and control module pin

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: ~12 V present at the actuator power pin with ignition on (vehicle-specific)
  • Control signal: may be switched ground or PWM drive from control module (0–12 V or PWM duty variable)
  • Actuator resistance: low ohms when windings intact (typical range 1–30 ohms depending on design)
  • Current draw: rises while actuator moves (typically small amps to several amps; sustained high current indicates mechanical bind)
  • Open-circuit condition: very high resistance/infinite ohms between actuator terminals or between actuator and module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use an OBD/specialty scan tool to verify C0601 and view any related codes; note freeze-frame data and monitor outputs.
  2. Attempt to actuate the air dam from the scan tool while observing the dam and listening for actuator operation.
  3. Visually inspect the actuator, harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins or water ingress. Repair or replace obvious defects.
  4. Check fuses and relays in the actuator circuit; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  5. Backprobe the actuator connector with ignition on and command the dam: verify supply voltage and control signal (or ground) at the connector.
  6. If no voltage or command is present at the actuator, test continuity between the actuator connector and the control module. Repair any open/high-resistance wiring.
  7. With connector disconnected, measure actuator winding resistance. If infinite/open, replace actuator.
  8. If wiring and actuator are good but no proper command from module, test the control module output driver for short/open per factory procedure — consider module fault after confirming wiring/actuator integrity.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform functional test and repeat road/actuation tests to confirm repair.

  • Failed actuator motor (open windings)
  • Blown fuse for the air dam circuit
