Causes

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and live data with a scan tool—observe steering angle sensor value at center wheel and while turning wheel slowly
  • Check for additional related codes (ABS, ESP, EPS, U-codes)
  • Inspect connector at steering angle sensor and ECU for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Visually inspect wiring from sensor through the steering column for chafing, pinching, or damage
  • Check relevant fuses and power feeds for the steering column electronics
  • Perform a wiggle test on wiring/connectors while watching live data or DTCs for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • Sensor power/reference: typically 5 V supply (confirm spec for vehicle)
  • Sensor ground: near 0 V (good chassis ground)
  • Signal output (expected): typically a variable voltage or digital output within ~0.5–4.5 V or valid CAN message depending on design
  • ‘Low’ fault typically when signal < ~0.2–0.5 V or missing CAN message/timeout
  • Bus data: steering angle message frequency often 10–100 Hz on CAN (if networked) — absence = comm fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-level scan tool or equivalent. Record freeze-frame, pending codes, and live steering angle data at center and while slowly turning the wheel both directions.
  2. Visually inspect sensor connector, wiring, and steering column for damage, corrosion, or water ingress. Repair any visible issues.
  3. With ignition ON, verify sensor power and ground at the connector (reference ~5 V and ground ~0 V). If power/ground missing, trace and repair fuse, relay or feed circuit.
  4. Backprobe the signal wire and observe voltage with wheel centered and while rotating the wheel slowly. Confirm signal changes smoothly. If the voltage is low or stuck near ground, suspect open/short or failed sensor.
  5. If wiring and voltages are good but signal still incorrect, check for intermittent faults by wiggling harness/clock spring while watching live data; replace clock spring if intermittent contact is found.
  6. If circuit and wiring okay, replace the steering angle sensor/module per service procedures. After replacement, perform required steering angle calibration/relearn using the scan tool.
