Causes

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending fault codes (vehicle-specific scanner) and note freeze-frame data
  • Check battery voltage and charging system—ensure stable 12–14.5 V with engine running
  • Inspect fuses and relays related to ABS/traction/ECU power and ignition circuits
  • Visually inspect traction control module connector for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Check grounding points for corrosion/tightness near module and chassis grounds
  • Verify CAN bus communication with scan tool (module present/response) and check for U-codes

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage (key on/run): ~11–14.5 V; no undervoltage or large drops
  • CAN bus idle (recessive) voltages: approx. 2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L each; differential ~0 V recessive
  • CAN dominant state differential typically ~1–2 V between CAN_H and CAN_L when active
  • Wheel speed sensor: passive sensors produce AC pulses proportional to wheel speed; active sensors provide digital/variable voltage—compare left/right frequencies/voltages
  • Ground continuity: low ohms to chassis ground (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect manufacturer-level scan tool and read all stored, pending and history codes from ABS/traction and gateway modules; record module presence and communication status.
  2. Check vehicle battery state and charging system; verify stable supply voltage under load. Replace or charge battery if low.
  3. Inspect fuses/relays for ABS/traction control circuits; backprobe module supply and ignition feed for correct voltage with key on and engine running.
  4. Visually inspect and wiggle-test connectors, wiring harnesses, and module mounting for corrosion, water ingress, or damaged pins; repair as required.
  5. With scan tool monitor CAN bus status and attempt communication to traction module; if module not responding, check CAN wiring continuity and resistance between CAN nodes and gateway.
  6. Verify grounds: measure resistance from module ground to chassis ground; repair poor grounds.
  7. Check wheel speed, yaw rate and steering angle sensor signals at sensors and at module connector while rotating wheel or turning steering; compare left/right sensor outputs.
  8. If wiring, power and communication are good but code persists, attempt module reinitialization: clear codes, cycle ignition and road test while monitoring. If reoccurs, reflash/update module software if dealer-level updates available.
  9. If software update and wiring tests fail, consider module replacement following manufacturer coding/programming and perform required sensor/module calibrations (yaw/steering angle, ABS bleed or basic settings).
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform a full road test per manufacturer procedure; confirm no reoccurrence and that all safety systems function normally.
