Causes

  • Short to battery (12V) on the gear lever position/sensor circuit
  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness contacting a constant 12V source
  • Faulty gear lever position sensor (transmission range sensor) with internal short
  • Incorrectly installed or corroded connector pins
  • Fault in body/control module (less common)

Symptoms

  • Gear position indicator incorrect or not displayed
  • Vehicle may not start or start in wrong gear due to park/neutral safety interlock
  • Transmission may refuse to shift or enter limp mode
  • Malfunction indicator lamp or transmission/gear warning on the dash
  • Stored fault code(s) and possible reduced functionality of related systems

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visual inspection of gear lever sensor, transmission connector and harness for damage, pin corrosion or melted insulation
  • Check fuses and relays related to transmission and selector circuits
  • With ignition ON (engine off) measure signal wire voltage at the gear lever sensor connector and compare to expected values
  • Check continuity and resistance between the signal wire and battery positive for a short (with ignition off)
  • Unplug the sensor and see if the code clears or changes to help isolate harness vs sensor

Signal parameters

  • Reference/supply voltage: typically near battery voltage on supply pin (approx. 12V) — verify against OEM data
  • Signal output: expected pulsed or switched voltage within defined ranges per gear — a short to battery will show constant ~12V
  • Resistance: low ohms between signal and battery positive indicates a short
  • Ground integrity: low resistance to chassis ground expected on ground pin

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, record C1135 and any related codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Perform a careful visual inspection of the selector sensor connector, wiring along its route, bulkhead/firewall grommet, and transmission harness for damage or pin corrosion.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the selector/gear position sensor connector. Check continuity between the sensor signal terminal and battery positive. A short is indicated by near-zero ohms.
  4. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector supply and signal terminals. Observe voltages. A signal stuck at battery voltage suggests a short to +12V.
  5. Wiggle the harness and connectors while monitoring the signal to reproduce intermittent shorts.
  6. If the harness shows no obvious fault, reconnect sensor and measure resistance/voltage at the sensor side. If the sensor side is OK but vehicle-side is shorted, trace and repair wiring to module. If the sensor itself is shorted, replace the sensor.
  7. If wiring and sensor check OK, inspect the receiving control module input for damage. Follow OEM procedures before replacing a module.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm the fault does not return and that gear indicator and interlocks operate normally.

Likely causes

  • Wiring damage near the gear selector, transmission or through firewall
  • Corroded connector allowing battery voltage to feed the signal wire
  • Sensor internal failure causing output stuck at battery voltage
  • Aftermarket work or repairs where wires were mis-routed or spliced

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Control module has detected the gear lever position circuit tied to battery voltage (short to +12V). The module logged DTC C1135 and may disable or limit related functions until the fault is addressed. Further diagnosis is required to locate and repair the short.
