ABS Fluid Dumping Exceeds Maximum Timing

Causes

  • Stuck or mechanically obstructed dump (release) valve in ABS hydraulic unit
  • Faulty ABS hydraulic control solenoid (dump valve) or pump
  • Open/shorted wiring or poor connector to ABS solenoid or pump
  • Defective ABS control module or driver transistor
  • Low brake fluid level, air in hydraulic lines or internal hydraulic leak
  • Faulty brake pressure sensor or incorrect sensor readings

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light (and possibly traction control light) illuminated
  • ABS may not operate normally during hard stops; longer pedal travel
  • Unusual pump/run-on noise from ABS module during braking events
  • Brake fluid level low or frequent need to top up fluid
  • Diagnostic trouble codes related to ABS hydraulic control present

What to check

  • Read ABS module codes and freeze frame with a capable scan tool; confirm C1169 is current or pending
  • Check brake fluid level and inspect for external leaks
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring to ABS hydraulic unit for damage or corrosion
  • Monitor live data: commanded valve/dump timing, actual valve status, pump current, brake pressure sensor values
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to manufacturer specification
  • Backprobe solenoid power and ground while commanding dump; confirm correct switching and voltage levels

Signal parameters

  • Commanded dump/solenoid ON-time (ms) vs. actual ON-time — compare to manufacturer maximum
  • Solenoid coil resistance — compare to manufacturer specification (typical low-ohm value; check service data)
  • Solenoid supply voltage when commanded — near battery voltage when powered, low when off
  • Pump motor current draw while running — elevated or continuous draw indicates stuck valve or internal leak
  • Brake pressure sensor voltage or pressure reading — should change predictably when dump commanded
  • Wheel speed sensor signals (used by ABS logic) — ensure valid inputs during events

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the code: connect a diagnostic scan tool, record freeze frame and live data; clear codes and road test to reproduce.
  2. Check brake fluid level and inspect for visible leaks; top up if low, then recheck code after test drive.
  3. Inspect ABS hydraulic unit connectors and harness for corrosion, corrosion, pin damage, or loose terminals; repair as needed.
  4. With scan tool, command the dump/valve function while observing commanded ON-time and actual response. Note discrepancies.
  5. Backprobe the solenoid power and ground during a commanded dump. Verify supply voltage, switching, and absence of a short to ground/battery.
  6. Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to spec. If out of range, replace solenoid or hydraulic unit as per service manual.
  7. Measure pump motor current during operation. Excessive or continuous current can indicate internal hydraulic leakage or stuck valve.
  8. If wiring and solenoid test good, check ABS module outputs and driver circuitry; replace module only after confirming external components and wiring are OK.
  9. If hydraulic unit is suspected (internal valve stuck or leaking), consider rebuilding or replacing the ABS hydraulic assembly per manufacturer procedure.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and retest to confirm proper timing and no recurrence of C1169. Perform ABS self-test and a controlled brake test.

Likely causes

  • Contaminated or seized dump valve in hydraulic control unit
  • Shorted/grounded solenoid power/ground circuit causing continuous activation
  • ABS module output transistor failing; cannot properly time valve actuation
  • Low reservoir level or internal leak causing extended dump attempts
  • Intermittent connector contact or corroded pin at ABS unit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
