Causes

  • Damaged or failed rear-left wheel speed sensor (RL)
  • Broken/chafed wiring harness to RL sensor (open, short to ground, short to power)
  • Corroded/loose connector or poor pin contact at RL sensor or ABS module
  • Damaged/missing/dirt/metal-debris on tone wheel (reluctor ring) at left rear
  • Excessive wheel bearing play causing sensor/tone-ring air gap variation
  • Intermittent grounding or poor chassis ground related to ABS circuit

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated (may also show ESC/TC light)
  • Intermittent or sporadic ABS/ESC activation during low-speed or cornering
  • Traction control or stability functions disabled or reduced
  • Brake pedal pulsation during ABS events (possible)
  • Stored C1207 code in ABS module; related fault freeze frame may show sudden RL speed changes

What to check

  • Read ABS/ESC codes and freeze frame with a capable scan tool; verify C1207 is current or historic
  • Monitor live wheel speed data for all four wheels while rotating wheels or during road test; look for spikes, dropouts or inconsistent RL readings
  • Visually inspect RL sensor, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Wiggle test harness and connector while observing live data to reproduce intermittent behaviour
  • Inspect tone wheel (reluctor) for missing teeth, heavy rust, debris or heavy runout; check sensor air gap and alignment
  • Check wheel bearing play and axle/hub runout at left rear

Signal parameters

  • Sensor types: Hall/active (digital) => requires reference voltage (commonly 5V) and provides a square/pulsed signal; Variable Reluctance (VR) => AC sine/alternating voltage that increases with speed
  • Expected behavior: signal frequency proportional to wheel speed; amplitude (VR) or logic levels (Hall) should be stable without spikes or dropouts
  • Intermittent fault: occasional missing pulses, abrupt amplitude changes, or noise spikes indicate range/performance issues
  • Refer to vehicle-specific service manual for exact voltage, resistance and waveform specifications

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, retrieve DTCs and freeze frame, and record current/live RL wheel speed data.
  2. Visually inspect RL sensor, tone wheel and harness; repair obvious damage and secure connector.
  3. Perform wiggle test on wiring/connectors while watching live data to try to reproduce the jump/intermittent event.
  4. Check sensor supply and ground at connector/back-probe; confirm reference voltage and ground continuity to ABS module.
  5. Measure sensor resistance (for passive sensors) or check signal with multimeter/oscilloscope while rotating wheel; compare to spec or to another wheel sensor.
  6. Inspect tone wheel for missing teeth, heavy corrosion or contamination; clean or replace if damaged. Measure air gap and correct to spec.
  7. Check wheel bearing for excessive play and rectify if causing variable gap or tone-ring runout.
  8. Repair or replace faulty connector/wiring/sensor as indicated by tests. Use proper routing and secure harness to avoid reoccurrence.
  9. Clear codes, perform relearn procedures if required by manufacturer, road test and verify that RL speed signal is steady and C1207 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Wiring/connector problem (intermittent pin contact, corrosion, chafe)
  • Failed RL wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged or contaminated tone wheel at left rear
  • Wheel bearing wear causing variable gap

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS module detected an intermittent or out-of-range wheel speed signal from the Rear Left (LH) sensor (Range/Performance/Intermittent). ABS/ESC functions may be limited until the fault is corrected.
