loss of rear wheel speed signal

Causes

  • Failed rear wheel speed sensor (open, shorted or internal failure)
  • Damaged or missing tone ring/reluctor (broken teeth, heavy corrosion or debris)
  • Wiring harness open, short to ground or power, or intermittent connector connection
  • Corroded or water‑ingressed connector at sensor or ABS module
  • Failed ABS/ESP control module or internal amplifier
  • Poor ground or supply voltage to sensor circuit

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or traction/stability control warning lamp illuminated
  • Loss of ABS, traction control or stability functions for affected wheel
  • Intermittent or permanent fault stored in ABS/ESP module
  • Possible pulsating brake pedal under ABS events or reduced ABS functionality
  • Occasional false ABS activations or inhibited ABS when fault present

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame/data and related chassis codes with a scan tool
  • Inspect rear wheel sensor connectors for corrosion, water ingress and secure fit
  • Visually inspect tone ring/reluctor on hub/axle for damage, missing teeth or heavy contamination
  • Wiggle test wiring from sensor to chassis module while watching live speed signal for intermittency
  • Check ABS power and ground fuses and battery voltage at ABS module
  • Check wheel bearing for excessive play or metal debris near sensor

Signal parameters

  • Passive (magnetic) sensor: AC sine/oscillating voltage; amplitude typically 0.2–4.0 Vpp depending on speed and sensor type
  • Active (Hall/VR) sensor: digital square wave or switched 0–5 V (typical low ≈0.5 V, high ≈4.5 V)
  • Resistance (typical passive sensor): roughly 800–2000 ohms (manufacturer dependent) — compare to spec
  • Pulse frequency = wheel revs × tone ring tooth count; frequency increases with vehicle speed (use oscilloscope)
  • Expected waveform: consistent, clean pulses with no long dropouts; amplitude/frequency should vary smoothly with wheel rotation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect qualified scan tool, confirm C1235 and any related codes; view live wheel speed channels and note which rear wheel shows no/erratic signal.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the suspect rear sensor, tone ring and connector; remove debris and ensure correct sensor air gap.
  3. With ignition on (engine off), disconnect sensor connector and inspect terminals for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress; clean and reseal as needed.
  4. Measure sensor resistance (for passive type) with multimeter and compare to factory spec; an open or shorted sensor indicates replacement.
  5. Spin wheel or use scan tool to read wheel speed while monitoring waveform with an oscilloscope or an advanced scan tool; look for missing pulses, low amplitude or noisy waveform.
  6. If no sensor output but wiring to module has continuity, check supply/ground to active sensors (approx. 5V reference) and signal return; repair wiring as necessary.
  7. Perform a wiggle test on harness and connectors while watching live data for intermittent faults.
  8. Inspect tone ring on hub/axle for damage, missing teeth or heavy rust; repair or replace hub/tone ring if needed.
  9. If wiring and sensor check good, perform module input test or swap with a known good channel if service information permits, or consult manufacturer procedures for module diagnostics.
  10. After repair, clear codes, perform vehicle road test and verify correct, stable rear wheel speed readings and that ABS/ESC warnings do not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the rear wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged tone ring (cracked, missing teeth or filled with debris)
  • Open or short in the sensor wiring between wheel and ABS module
  • Failed wheel speed sensor (common failure item)
  • Intermittent break in harness caused by suspension movement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Loss of rear wheel speed signal — ABS/ESP module not receiving valid pulse from rear wheel speed sensor; driveability and stability functions may be affected.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0 - 3.0 hours
