Causes

  • Rear ride-height sensor failed or out of range
  • Open/short or high-resistance in sensor wiring or connector
  • Corroded/wet connector pins or poor ground
  • Loss of reference power (sensor supply) or ground
  • Damaged suspension linkage or sensor mechanical binding
  • Faulty TCS/ABS/BCM module or internal communication error

Symptoms

  • TCS/ESC warning or message on dash
  • Traction control limited or disabled
  • ABS/TCS fault indicator lamp illuminated
  • Suspension level warning (on vehicles with auto-leveling)
  • Stored C1241 diagnostic trouble code

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with a capable diagnostic tool; read C1241 and any related codes and freeze frame or live data
  • Visually inspect rear height sensor(s), linkages, and mounting for damage or binding
  • Inspect connectors for corrosion, pushed-out pins, water intrusion, or bent pins
  • Verify battery voltage and chassis/engine grounds are good
  • Probe sensor connector: verify reference supply, signal, and ground voltages with key ON
  • Wiggle wiring and suspension linkage while observing live data to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply: typically 5 V (verify with factory wiring diagram)
  • Signal output: typically ranges ~0.5–4.5 V as suspension moves (varies by design)
  • Expected change in signal when raising/lowering rear ride height (smooth, monotonic change)
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance between signal and supply/ground; short: near 0 Ω
  • Typical potentiometer resistance: often in the low kΩ range (check OEM spec before replacing)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function scan tool. Record DTCs, freeze frame, and live data for rear height sensor(s). Note signal values at rest.
  2. Perform a visual check: inspect sensor body, linkage, harness routing, and connectors for damage or contamination.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), measure connector pins: verify reference 5 V supply, sensor ground, and sensor signal voltage. Compare to live data on the scanner.
  4. Move the suspension up and down (or manually operate sensor linkage) while watching signal voltage. Signal should change smoothly without dropout.
  5. If signal is stuck, measure sensor resistance per factory procedure. If open/short or out of spec, replace sensor.
  6. If voltages are absent or incorrect, backprobe harness and check continuity to the ABS/TCS module; repair open/shorts, corrosion, or poor grounds.
  7. Perform a wiggle test of the harness while observing live data to find intermittent faults. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  8. If wiring and sensor test good, check for communication faults or module errors. Inspect ABS/TCS module connectors and grounds.
  9. After repair or replacement of sensor/wiring/module, clear codes and perform a drive or suspension cycle to confirm the DTC does not return.
  10. If module replacement performed, complete any required calibration/level sensor relearn procedures per service manual.

Likely causes

  • Dirty/corroded sensor connector at the rear height sensor
  • Broken/chafed wire between sensor and ABS/TCS module
  • Sensor potentiometer element worn or stuck (mechanical)
  • Low battery voltage or intermittent supply to sensor
  • Module receiving invalid height signal due to short to ground
