Causes

  • Failed rear right height sensor (potentiometer or hall sensor)
  • Open, short or high resistance in sensor wiring
  • Corroded/loose connector or water intrusion at sensor
  • Mechanical binding or broken suspension linkage on the RR sensor
  • Blown fuse, poor ground, or loss of reference voltage to sensor
  • Faulty suspension/height control module or internal module failure

Symptoms

  • Suspension/level warning light or ABS/ESC lamp illuminated
  • Vehicle reports incorrect rear ride height or uneven stance
  • Automatic leveling or adaptive suspension not functioning for RR corner
  • DTC C1255 stored in control module; may be intermittent
  • Possible poor ride quality or limited suspension adjustment

What to check

  • Read DTCs and live data with a scan tool; note freeze frame and PID values for RR height sensor
  • Visually inspect RR height sensor, mounting, lever and linkage for damage, looseness, rust or binding
  • Inspect connector for corrosion, bent pins, water entry and ensure secure locking
  • Wiggle the harness and connector while monitoring live PID for intermittent changes
  • Check for proper fuses and good ground(s) at suspension/height control module
  • Compare RR sensor readings to the other height sensors (left side) to identify discrepancies

Signal parameters

  • Typical 3-wire sensor: 5V reference, signal, and ground (verify with vehicle spec)
  • Expected signal range approximately 0.5–4.5 V across full sensor travel (varies by model)
  • At normal ride height signal often around mid-range (~2.0–3.0 V) — check OEM spec
  • Infinite or open-circuit resistance when sensor fails; short to ground or to 12V will produce out-of-range voltage
  • Continuity from sensor ground to chassis ground should be low (near 0 Ω); 5V reference present with key ON

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool. Confirm C1255 and capture live RR height sensor PID, freeze frame and whether code is 'range high' or 'range low'.
  2. Visually inspect sensor, lever and wiring at the rear right corner. Look for physical damage, binding, corrosion, or contamination.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor connector: verify 5V reference, ground continuity and measure signal voltage. Move the suspension linkage and observe the signal for smooth change within specified range.
  4. If signal is fixed, open or out-of-range, check wiring continuity from sensor connector to the suspension control module and for shorts to battery/ground. Repair any damaged wiring.
  5. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal is abnormal, replace the rear right height sensor. Reconnect and retest sensor operation and live data while moving linkage.
  6. If replacement sensor still shows fault, inspect module power, grounds and connectors. Check for related communication or module DTCs. Perform module reflash or replacement only after confirming harness and sensor are good.
  7. After repairs, clear codes, perform any required learn/adaptation or calibration procedures per manufacturer, and verify fault does not return under normal operating conditions.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or contaminated RR sensor connector
  • Wiring short to battery or to ground on the RR signal circuit
  • Sensor internal failure (no/erratic output throughout travel)
  • Sensor linkage seized, preventing expected range of motion
  • Faulty module or missing 5V reference / ground

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear Right height sensor circuit out of range — sensor signal is higher or lower than expected limits or is intermittent. Stores fault and may disable RR automatic height control.
