Causes

  • Open or short in the solenoid wiring harness
  • Poor connector contact (corrosion, bent pins, loose terminal)
  • Failed solenoid coil in the hydraulic block
  • Faulty ABS/ESP hydraulic module or internal driver
  • Intermittent wiring damage from rubbing, heat or moisture
  • Aftermarket or recent repair work with incorrect connector routing

Symptoms

  • ABS/ESP warning lamp illuminated
  • Reduced stability/ABS functionality or message in dash
  • Possible altered brake feel under ABS intervention
  • Fault may be permanent or intermittent depending on wiring

What to check

  • Read and record ABS/ESP fault codes and freeze frame with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visually inspect connector at hydraulic unit and wiring to right front wheel for damage, corrosion, or pin damage
  • Check for proper battery voltage at ABS module power supply (with key on)
  • Verify ground(s) for ABS module are clean and secure
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance at the hydraulic unit connector
  • Back-probe connector while commanding solenoid with scan tool to observe voltage/PWM

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage (key ON): approx. 11–14 V
  • Solenoid coil resistance (typical range): 5–40 Ω (manufacturer-specific; verify with data sheet)
  • Command signal: switched to ground or PWM from ABS module when activated
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance; Short-to-ground: near 0 Ω; Short-to-VB+: near 0 Ω between supply and coil

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool, clear codes, then attempt to re-create C1303 and view live data while commanding the right front hold solenoid on/off.
  2. Visually inspect harness and connector at the ABS hydraulic unit and right front wheel for damage, corrosion, water ingress, or loose pins; repair as needed.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the hydraulic unit connector and measure the solenoid coil resistance across the two solenoid terminals. Compare to manufacturer spec. Replace hydraulic unit if coil is open or shorted.
  4. With ignition ON, verify battery voltage at the ABS module power terminal and verify clean ground(s).
  5. Back-probe the solenoid connector at the hydraulic unit while commanding the solenoid: verify proper supply voltage and switching/PWM from the ABS module. No switching indicates module or driver fault.
  6. If wiring is suspected, perform continuity tests from the ABS module connector to the solenoid connector (with connectors disconnected). Repair any open/shorts and protect routing.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good but the solenoid shows correct coil resistance yet the module does not command or reports short, consider ABS/ESP control module internal driver failure — evaluate module repair or replacement per manufacturer procedure.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and road test to confirm the code does not return and ABS/ESP system operates normally.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or pushed-out pin at the right front axle solenoid connector
  • Broken or chafed wire in harness to the ABS hydraulic unit
  • Failed solenoid coil inside the hydraulic block
  • Internal driver transistor failure in the ABS/ESP control module
