C1353
Left Rear LFI Open/Short | Left Rear Low Frequency Initiator Open/Short Failure | Pressure sensor (Wh1) - electrical | Right Rear Low Frequency Initiator Open/Short Failure
Causes
- Open, short or high-resistance wiring in the left rear LFI/sensor circuit
- Corroded or loose connector at the left rear sensor or ABS unit
- Damaged or contaminated left rear LFI / pressure sensor
- Water intrusion or debris at sensor or connector
- Faulty ABS/ESC control module or internal driver circuitry (less common)
Symptoms
- ABS and/or VDC/ESC warning lamp illuminated
- Traction control disabled or limited braking performance from rear circuits
- ABS may not activate properly on rear wheel during hard braking
- Possible stored ABS-related codes and freeze-frame data
What to check
- Read and record all ABS/traction codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scanner
- Visually inspect left rear wheel sensor, connector, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or water entry
- Check connector mating surfaces for dirt, corrosion or bent pins
- Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring live data for dropouts
- Measure sensor circuit resistance and compare to specification (open = infinite, short ≈ 0 Ω)
- Measure supply/reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector (if active sensor)
Signal parameters
- Open circuit: infinite resistance between sensor signal and ground/return
- Short circuit: near 0 Ω between signal and ground or signal and +V
- Passive (inductive) sensors: typical DC resistance often in the several hundred to low thousands of ohms (e.g., ~800–1500 Ω) — vehicle-specific
- Active/Hall sensors: produce pulsed voltage signal (0.5–5 V) while wheel rotates; stable reference supply typically present when key on/crank
- Expect a clean, repeatable waveform from the rotating wheel; excessive noise or no waveform indicates fault
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect diagnostic scanner, record all ABS/traction codes and live data. Note freeze-frame.
- Visually inspect left rear sensor, mounting area, and wiring for damage, contamination, or incorrect orientation.
- Disconnect left rear sensor connector; inspect pins for corrosion, bent or pushed-out terminals; reconnect securely.
- With connector disconnected, measure resistance between sensor signal and reference/ground per service manual. Compare to expected range or look for open/short.
- With ignition ON (engine off) measure reference supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector (if applicable).
- If resistance and supply look correct, rotate the wheel by hand or drive slowly while monitoring live sensor data or scope waveform. Confirm signal presence and shape.
- Wiggle harness and connectors during testing to reproduce intermittent faults.
- Repair damaged wiring, replace connector terminals or sensor as indicated. Protect repaired harness from chafe and moisture.
- Clear codes, perform road test with ABS activation checks. Re-scan to confirm code does not return.
- If fault persists after sensor/wiring replacement, test or replace ABS/ESC control module per manufacturer procedures.
Likely causes
- Wiring abrasion or chafed harness at suspension/wheel area causing intermittent open/short
- Corroded/loose pin at the left rear sensor connector
- Failed left rear LFI / pressure sensor
- Contamination (rust/debris) preventing correct sensor operation
