Door Switch | Door Switch Fault

Causes

  • Faulty door switch (stuck, worn, or mechanically damaged)
  • Open or shorted wiring between the switch and BCM
  • Corroded, loose or contaminated connector terminals
  • Poor ground or power supply to the switch circuit
  • Intermittent connection due to pin damage or harness chafing
  • Faulty BCM or internal input driver failure

Symptoms

  • Door ajar indicator lamp erroneously on or off
  • Interior/dome lights won’t turn off when doors are closed or won’t turn on when opened
  • Door chime or warning buzzer sounds incorrectly
  • Central locking or auto-lock features behave irregularly
  • Battery drain if dome light stays on
  • Driver information display shows incorrect door status

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and live data with a diagnostic scan tool; confirm which door input is flagged
  • Visually inspect the affected door switch, surrounding area, and connector for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Operate the door manually while watching live data to see if signal changes correspond to switch action
  • Check connector mating; push/pull while observing scan tool for intermittent change
  • Inspect wiring through the door hinge/boot for chafing or breaks
  • Measure power and ground supply to the switch if applicable

Signal parameters

  • Expected logical states: CLOSED (switch activated) and OPEN (switch released) as seen on scan tool
  • Voltage: switch circuits commonly pulled to battery or module supply when open and to near 0 V when closed — measure relative to chassis ground
  • Resistance: CLOSED should show continuity (low ohms) between switch terminals; OPEN should show high resistance / open circuit
  • Scan-tool parameter: door status should toggle between ON/OFF or 0/1 when the door is opened and closed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner; read and record C1509 plus any associated codes and live data for door switch inputs.
  2. Identify which door/switch the code references from the BCM or instrument cluster data.
  3. With ignition on, operate the identified door while monitoring the live input; note whether the BCM sees consistent changes.
  4. Visually inspect switch and connector for corrosion, bent pins, water entry, or physical damage. Repair or clean as needed.
  5. Wiggle test the harness in the door hinge area while monitoring input for intermittent faults; repair broken wires or sleeving.
  6. Unplug the switch connector and perform a continuity check across the switch while actuating it; compare to expected open/closed behavior.
  7. Measure voltage at the switch connector: confirm proper supply and that the signal changes to expected voltage/ground when actuated.
  8. If switch and wiring test good, back-probe at BCM connector to verify signal reaches BCM; if wiring is good but signal missing or incorrect, suspect BCM input.
  9. Replace the door switch assembly if it fails physical/electrical tests. Repair wiring or connectors as required (repair splices, replace harness sections, replace grommet).
  10. After repairs, clear DTCs, verify correct operation over multiple open/close cycles, and confirm code does not return.
  11. If fault persists and wiring/switch are verified OK, consult manufacturer procedures for BCM diagnosis/repair or consider BCM replacement/programming.

Likely causes

  • Failed door jamb/switch assembly on the affected door
  • Broken or pinched wiring harness in door hinge area
  • Corroded connector at door switch or body harness splice
  • Connector terminals pushed out or bent preventing proper contact
  • Water intrusion causing intermittent short or high resistance
  • BCM input channel fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Door switch circuit fault detected — BCM registering abnormal/open/shorted signal from door switch input.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5 - 2.0 hours
