Causes
- Open or short in left rear wheel speed sensor wiring
- Corroded or loose connector at sensor or ABS module
- Faulty left rear wheel speed sensor (Hall or VR type)
- Damaged or missing tone ring/tooth on wheel bearing/hub
- Excessive sensor air gap or misalignment
- Contamination (metal shavings, rust, brake dust) on sensor or ring
Symptoms
- ABS warning light illuminated
- TCS/ESC/Traction control warning light illuminated or functionality reduced
- Loss of ABS or traction control operation for left rear wheel
- Intermittent or constant fault code stored for left rear wheel
- Possible speedometer/odometer irregularities on some vehicles
- Possible wheel lock/pulsation during ABS events
What to check
- Read freeze frame and live-data with a scan tool; monitor all wheel speed sensors while rotating wheels
- Visually inspect left rear sensor, connector, tone ring, and wiring harness for damage or contamination
- Check connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or poor contact; reseat and inspect
- Perform resistance and/or output voltage check at the sensor (compare to spec or another wheel sensor)
- Check for continuity and shorts between sensor wires and chassis/ignition power using multimeter
- Check reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector for active (Hall) sensors
Signal parameters
- Passive (VR) sensor: AC voltage output increases with wheel speed; low-speed output may be a few hundred mV, rising to several volts at higher speed; frequency proportional to speed
- Active (Hall/TTL) sensor: Square wave or digital pulse signal, typically 0–5 V (or 0–12 V on some systems) centered on reference voltage; frequency proportional to wheel speed
- Typical resistance (VR) sensors: often a few hundred to a few thousand ohms — consult vehicle spec
- Reference voltage for active sensors: commonly ~5 V; verify at harness connector with ignition ON
- Expected continuity: low ohms between sensor ground and chassis ground; no short to power
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, record freeze frame and live data for all wheel speed sensors; note if left rear is zero, noisy, or out of range.
- Perform a visual inspection of left rear sensor, connector, wiring, and tone ring. Repair or clean any obvious damage or contamination.
- With ignition ON (engine off) unplug the left rear sensor and inspect pins for corrosion or damage; reconnect securely.
- Measure sensor resistance (for VR) or check reference voltage and ground (for active sensors) at the harness connector; compare to spec or a good sensor.
- Rotate the wheel and observe sensor output: AC voltage/frequency for VR or digital pulses for Hall sensors. Replace sensor if no valid signal.
- Perform continuity check from sensor connector to ABS module connector to identify open or short circuits; repair wiring as needed.
- If intermittent, wiggle harness and suspension while monitoring live data to locate intermittent breaks; repair or replace damaged sections.
- Inspect tone ring for missing/bent teeth or heavy rust; replace tone ring or hub assembly if damaged.
- If wiring and sensor test good, check ABS module inputs and grounds; test or replace ABS module if internal fault is suspected.
- After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm no recurrence and proper ABS/TCS operation.
Likely causes
- Connector corrosion or water ingress at left rear sensor
- Broken wire between sensor and ABS module due to suspension movement
- Sensor damaged during brake or hub service
- Debris or rust on tone ring causing no or noisy signal
- Sensor gap too large after incorrect installation
Fault status
Status
Left rear wheel speed sensor circuit fault detected by ABS/TCS control; system may disable ABS/traction control for affected wheel and illuminate warning lamps.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
