Communication error

Causes

  • Low or unstable battery/charging system voltage
  • Poor ground or power supply to one or more modules
  • Damaged, corroded, or loose connectors or wiring on CAN / LIN lines
  • Short or open on the CAN/LIN bus or missing termination resistor
  • Faulty control module transmitting bad data or going bus-off
  • Software mismatch, corrupted firmware or failed module update

Symptoms

  • Communication-related warning lights (ABS, airbag, ESP, or general fault lamp)
  • Loss or intermittent operation of affected systems (e.g., ABS, traction control, instrument cluster)
  • Stored and repeating communication DTCs in one or more modules
  • Modules not present or not responding when scanned with a diagnostic tool
  • Vehicle may enter limp mode or disable certain features

What to check

  • Read all modules with a capable Fiat-compatible scan tool; note related U/C codes and freeze frame data
  • Check battery voltage (engine off and cranking) and charging system voltage with known-good meter
  • Inspect main power and ground connections (battery terminals, chassis grounds, engine ground straps)
  • Visually inspect CAN/LIN wiring, connectors and pin condition for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check fuses and relays that supply communication or gateway modules
  • Measure CAN high/low voltages and CAN bus termination resistance at module connector

Signal parameters

  • Battery/resting voltage: ~12.4–12.8 V (engine off); charging: ~13.5–14.8 V (engine running)
  • CAN bus recessive voltage: both CAN_H and CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V
  • CAN bus dominant state: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • CAN bus termination: ~60 Ω measured across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω in parallel)
  • LIN bus idle: single-wire low-speed serial levels (varies by manufacturer) — check service data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect Fiat-compatible scan tool, read all controllers, record C1569 and any U-codes, copy freeze frame or live data.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; note whether C1569 returns immediately or intermittently.
  3. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system health; correct low-voltage issues first.
  4. Visually inspect and reseat connectors for modules shown in fault details (gateway, ABS, BCM, ECU).
  5. Measure power and ground at the affected module(s); repair any high resistance or missing supply.
  6. With ignition on, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the module connector: look for ~2.5 V idle and correct dominant levels during communication. Measure termination resistance across the bus.
  7. If bus voltages or termination are incorrect, trace wiring for short to ground, short to battery, or open circuit; repair or replace damaged sections.
  8. If wiring and power are good but the module will not communicate or repeatedly causes bus errors, isolate the module (disconnect) and see if bus returns to normal. Replace or reprogram the faulty module if confirmed.
  9. Review technical service bulletins and update module software/calibration where applicable. Re-scan and road test after repairs to verify no recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Loose/poor ground or battery connection causing intermittent voltage
  • Damaged CAN high/low wiring or connector corrosion at a control module
  • Module has entered bus-off state or is not responding
  • Missing/incorrect termination resistor on CAN bus after repairs

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Communication error detected on vehicle data bus or between modules; messages are lost, corrupted or a module is not responding. Check wiring, power/ground, and module interfaces.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
