Causes

  • Short or open in CAN_H or CAN_L between TCS, TCU, immobilizer or gateway
  • Failed or intermittent TCS, TCU, or immobilizer (Smartra) module
  • Damaged/loose/ corroded connector or pin at affected modules or junctions
  • Missing or shorted termination resistor(s) (incorrect 60 Ω total)
  • Short to battery or ground on CAN wiring
  • Low battery/unstable supply or poor ground to one or more modules

Symptoms

  • Traction control and/or ESC/TCS warning lights illuminated
  • Transmission shift abnormalities or limp-home mode (TCU communication lost)
  • Vehicle may not crank or start if immobilizer/SMARTRA not communicating
  • MIL (Check Engine) or security warning lamp illuminated
  • Loss of multiple module communications on scan tool (modules not responding)
  • Intermittent or permanent disablement of systems relying on the CAN network

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and main ground integrity before diagnosing bus faults
  • Using ignition OFF, measure resistive termination between CAN_H and CAN_L at diagnostic connector (expected ≈60 Ω)
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, water intrusion at TCS, TCU, immobilizer and gateway
  • With key ON, use scan tool to monitor CAN bus traffic and error counters (tx/rx)
  • Measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages with a DMM/oscilloscope (see signal params)

Signal parameters

  • Recessive: CAN_H ≈2.5 V, CAN_L ≈2.5 V (differential ≈0 V)
  • Dominant: CAN_H ≈3.5 V, CAN_L ≈1.5 V (differential ≈2.0 V)
  • Termination resistance: two 120 Ω resistors in parallel → ≈60 Ω measured across CAN_H to CAN_L with ignition OFF
  • Common-mode voltage typically ≈2.5 V referenced to vehicle ground
  • Typical bus speeds: 250 kbps or 500 kbps (verify vehicle-specific)
  • Excessive error frames or bus load indicated by oscilloscope/network analyzer

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture and save existing DTCs and freeze frame data with a scan tool; note time and conditions
  2. Check and record battery voltage and main ground integrity; charge battery if low
  3. Perform a visual inspection of CAN wiring, connectors and module grounds (focus on areas exposed to movement or moisture)
  4. With ignition OFF, measure resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L at the data link connector — expected ≈60 Ω. If open or very low, trace wiring for open/short
  5. With key ON, monitor CAN traffic using a scan tool/oscilloscope. Look for bus-off events, repeated error frames, or absence of frames from specific modules
  6. Check CAN_H and CAN_L DC voltages with respect to ground in both dominant and recessive states; use oscilloscope to identify short to battery/ground or excessive noise
  7. If a module is suspected, disconnect it per service manual and observe if bus returns to normal; reconnect and test next module to isolate the faulty unit or wiring branch
  8. Perform continuity and short-to-power/ground tests on suspect wiring; repair damaged sections with correct gauge wire and sealed connectors
  9. Replace faulty module only after wiring and connectors verified good. Program/initialize replacement modules per manufacturer procedure
  10. Clear DTCs, perform function checks and a road test. Re-scan to confirm the code does not return

Likely causes

  • Damaged CAN wiring harness at suspension/engine/transmission routing
  • Failed TCS or TCU module causing repeated bad frames and bus-off
  • Immobilizer module fault (Smartra) blocking network traffic or reporting errors
  • Connector corrosion or bent pins at gateway/diagnostic connector causing network disturbance
  • Faulty termination resistor or removal during previous repair
