Motor Current Short

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Short to ground or battery in the motor power feed
  • Short to battery/ignition (power) in the motor circuit
  • Damaged or shorted motor windings
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged motor connector or wiring harness
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay in the motor supply circuit
  • Faulty ABS/ESC control module (poor current sensing)

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or ESC warning light illuminated on dash
  • Possible brake system warning if ABS pump not operating
  • Reduced ABS/ESC function; loss of traction control or stability assist
  • Pump motor may not run when ABS engages, or may run erratically
  • Blown fuse or repeated fuse failure in related circuit
  • Intermittent or continuous drain on battery in some cases

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and live data with a scan tool, note motor current and error status
  • Visual inspection of motor, connectors, wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Inspect and verify fuses and relays for the pump motor circuit
  • Check for any related stored ABS/ESC codes that may narrow fault location
  • Measure battery voltage and supply voltage at motor connector with ignition on and while activating pump (with scan tool or commanded run)
  • Inspect connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or poor contact

Signal parameters

  • Motor current (A) — controlled/current-sense signal reported by ABS/ESC module; compare to manufacturer spec
  • Motor supply voltage (V) — should be near battery voltage when motor commanded
  • Motor winding resistance (Ω) — low ohm value; compare to spec to detect internal short
  • Relay control input (voltage/duty) — relay coil voltage or module drive signal
  • Fuse condition (open/closed) — presence of blown fuse in motor feed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: Park vehicle, engage parking brake, disconnect battery when doing wiring repairs. Follow manufacturer procedures for brake system safety before testing.
  2. Retrieve all ABS/ESC codes and live data. Note motor current and related parameters and whether fault is permanent or intermittent.
  3. Visually inspect motor, pump and connector for damage, corrosion, fluid contamination, or burnt wiring. Repair visible damage.
  4. Check fuses and relays for the pump motor circuit; replace any blown fuses and test relay operation.
  5. With connector connected, command the pump motor on using a scan tool (if available) and observe motor current and supply voltage. Record values.
  6. If overcurrent/short indicated, isolate motor by disconnecting motor connector. Clear codes and attempt to command motor; if code clears and no current at module side, problem is in motor or harness.
  7. Measure resistance of motor windings (with motor disconnected) and compare to specification; low resistance or short to ground indicates motor internal short.
  8. Inspect and test wiring: check for continuity between motor power pin and fuse/relay; check for shorts to ground and to battery power. Repair any chafed or damaged wiring and connector issues.
  9. If motor and wiring test OK, test or replace ABS/ESC control module or its current-sensing circuit per manufacturer guidance.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform functional test of ABS/ESC system and road test to confirm fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged motor wiring harness with insulation chafed to chassis ground
  • Corroded connector at motor causing low-impedance path
  • Faulty hydraulic pump motor windings (internal short)
  • Failed pump motor relay or blown fuse causing abnormal sensing
  • Control module sensing circuit fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
C1645 — Motor current short detected. The ABS/ESC control module has detected an abnormal short or overcurrent condition in the motor circuit (possible short to power/ground, internal motor fault, or wiring/connector failure).
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5 - 3.0 hours
