Internal Failure Detection

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Internal electronic component failure inside the control module (ECU)
  • Corrupted or failed module firmware/software
  • Intermittent or sustained low battery/voltage spikes during operation
  • Water ingress or corrosion inside the module or connector
  • Damaged wiring, short or open harness to the module
  • Poor ground or power connections to the module

Symptoms

  • Chassis/ABS/ESC/VSM warning lamp or another system warning illuminated
  • Loss or intermittent loss of the affected system function (ABS/ESC/Park assist etc.)
  • Stored internal fault(s) in module diagnostic memory
  • Vehicle may enter degraded or limp mode for safety
  • Intermittent operation or recurring faults after clearing codes

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze frame data with an OEM-capable scanner
  • Check battery voltage at rest and while cranking (11–14.5 V expected)
  • Inspect module connectors and harness for corrosion, water, bent pins or damage
  • Verify module grounds and power supply (measure resistance and voltage at connector)
  • Check CAN/LIN network integrity and for other modules reporting communication errors
  • Check for related sensor faults that could cause module internal protection actions

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply voltage at module: 11.0–14.5 V (stable under load)
  • Ignition on wake current: typical low mA range (consult OEM for exact spec)
  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (dominant ~3.5 V/1.5 V during traffic)
  • Module ground resistance to chassis:
  • Wheel speed sensor output: frequency or pulse rate proportional to wheel speed (0–2000+ Hz depending on speed)
  • Sensor resistance ranges vary by type — verify against OEM specifications

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-capable diagnostic scanner and capture current/ pending codes and freeze frame data
  2. Do not assume replacement before checks: record fault occurrence conditions (speed, temp, ignition state)
  3. Verify battery state of charge and charging system; charge or replace battery if low and retest
  4. Visually inspect module and harness for water damage, corrosion, loose pins or physical damage
  5. Measure power and ground at the module connector with respect to chassis; repair any poor connections
  6. Verify CAN/LIN communication to the module with a scope or bidirectional tool; check for bus errors or lost messages
  7. Check related sensors/actuators and wiring that interface to the module; repair shorts/opens and rerun tests
  8. Attempt a module software check/update or reflash with the latest OEM calibration if recommended
  9. If internal failure persists after power/communication/wiring verified, arrange for module repair/replacement and program to vehicle using OEM procedures
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform a test drive to confirm issue is resolved

Likely causes

  • Defective control module electronics (capacitors, processors, solder joints)
  • Failed memory or internal diagnostics in module firmware
  • Low battery voltage while module performing a write/update or self-test
  • Corroded connector pins or water penetration into module housing
  • Loss of CAN/LIN communications due to wiring fault or another module failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Internal failure detected in control module. Module diagnostics flagged an internal fault; system may be degraded or disabled until module is repaired or replaced.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
