Causes

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for additional DTCs and freeze frame data before clearing codes
  • Verify transfer case fluid level and condition (look for metal debris or contamination)
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring harness to transfer case actuator and sensors
  • Check fuses and relays for transfer case/4WD circuits
  • Attempt commanded shift with scan tool and observe actuator response and status flags
  • Listen for actuator motor operation during command; note abnormal noises

Signal parameters

  • Commanded transfer case mode (requested 2H/4H from switch/TCM)
  • Actual/reported transfer case mode or actuator position
  • Transfer case actuator motor current (A) and voltage (V)
  • 4WD selector switch input status
  • Front and rear axle/driveshaft speed sensors (to detect engagement)
  • Supply voltage (battery 12 V) and ground continuity to actuator

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce. Note conditions when fault sets.
  2. With a scan tool, command transfer case to shift between 2H and 4H while monitoring commanded vs actual mode, actuator position, motor current, and any error flags.
  3. Inspect transfer case fluid level and condition. Repair leaks and service fluid if low/contaminated per manufacturer spec.
  4. Visually inspect connectors and wiring to actuator and range sensor; wiggle harness while commanding shifts to check for intermittent faults. Repair corrosion or broken wires.
  5. Check fuse(s) and relays supplying the actuator/control module and verify 12 V and ground at the actuator connector while commanding a shift.
  6. If actuator does not respond electrically, measure actuator resistance and apply direct battery power (bench or vehicle) carefully to confirm mechanical movement. Use precautions to avoid injury.
  7. If actuator runs but transfer case does not change mode, inspect linkage, fork engagement and internal transfer case components for seized, worn or broken parts. Remove transfer case if internal inspection required.
  8. If sensors report incorrect position despite correct actuator operation, test/replace the transfer case range/position sensor and retest.
  9. Check modules and communications: verify CAN messages and that the controlling module is commanding the shift. Reflash/update module software if recommended by manufacturer service info.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform commanded shifts plus a road test to verify correct operation and that the C1728 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Transfer case actuator motor failed or stuck
  • Broken or seized shift linkage or fork
  • Open/shorted wiring or corroded connector at actuator
  • Defective transfer case range/position sensor reporting wrong state
  • Insufficient fluid level or fluid contamination causing mechanical hang-up
  • Loss of 12 V supply or ground to transfer case actuator
