Causes

  • Incorrect or incomplete variant coding after module replacement or software update
  • Wrong software/calibration file or programming package used for the vehicle options
  • Corrupted module configuration (EEPROM/FLASH) or interrupted programming
  • Module incompatibility (non‑matching part number or regional variant)
  • CAN/LIN communication errors during coding or at runtime
  • Low battery or unstable supply during coding operation

Symptoms

  • Permanent or intermittent PSB-related warning lamp(s) on instrument cluster
  • Limited or disabled functionality of features controlled by the PSB
  • Malfunction indicator messages in the dash or service menu
  • Multiple related DTCs for communication or configuration may be present
  • Vehicle may enter limp mode for affected systems until resolved

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with manufacturer-level diagnostic tool; read all stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame data
  • Check vehicle service history for recent module replacement, reflashes or battery events
  • Confirm module part number, software version, calibration ID and VIN stored in the PSB
  • Verify variant/coding bytes against manufacturer specification for this VIN/options
  • Inspect power, ground and CAN/LIN connectors at the PSB for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Check battery voltage and charging system during diagnosis and programming attempts

Signal parameters

  • PSB module supply voltage (key on / engine running)
  • Module ground integrity / continuity
  • CAN/LIN bus Tx/Rx status and error counters for the PSB node
  • PSB software version (SW), calibration ID (CALID) and part number (PN)
  • Stored VIN and variant/coding bytes/option bytes in the PSB
  • Programming status flags or last programming timestamp (if available)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a manufacturer-level scan tool and read all modules; record all DTCs and freeze frame data.
  2. Confirm recent service history for module replacement, reflashes, or battery disconnects that may coincide with the fault.
  3. Retrieve PSB module information: part number, software version, calibration ID, VIN and current variant/coding values.
  4. Compare the stored variant/coding values to the OEM specification for this VIN and option set; identify mismatches.
  5. Inspect connectors, wiring and ground points for the PSB; repair any physical issues found.
  6. Verify battery voltage is stable (use charger/maintainer if necessary) and ensure communications on CAN/LIN are healthy.
  7. If coding is incorrect or missing, perform variant coding using the manufacturer-approved diagnostic tool and the correct vehicle option file/VIN data.
  8. If coding fails or the module reports corrupted memory, attempt an authorized reflash of the module software/firmware per OEM procedure.
  9. If re-coding/re-flash cannot correct the error, consider replacing the PSB module with a correct part and perform variant coding again.
  10. Clear all DTCs, re-check for reoccurrence and perform a functional test/road test to confirm repair.
  11. Document the coding/software versions and actions taken in the vehicle record.

Likely causes

  • Recent PSB (or related) module replacement without correct variant coding
  • Software reflash used wrong vehicle option file or VIN not programmed
  • Programming process was interrupted (battery disconnected, tool error)
  • Faulty module that cannot store or report variant data
  • Network communication issue preventing module from validating coding

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Variant Coding Error - PSB. Module configuration does not match vehicle variant or coding data is invalid/missing.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
