Failure in the chime circuit

Causes

  • Blown fuse protecting the chime speaker/driver circuit
  • Open or shorted wiring (speaker, speaker ground, or driver output)
  • Corroded or loose connector at the chime speaker, instrument cluster or BCM
  • Failed chime speaker or piezo element
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) / instrument cluster chime driver or software error
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to wiring or speaker

Symptoms

  • No audible chime for key-in, key-out, door open, seatbelt, or warning alerts
  • Intermittent or distorted chime sound
  • Related warning lamps/messages may appear on the dash
  • Chimes work sometimes or only when tapping the dash (intermittent connector/wiring issue)

What to check

  • Read stored and pending DTCs from BCM and instrument cluster; note freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect fuses related to interior/BCM/chime circuits
  • Inspect chime speaker and connector for corrosion, water ingress, damage and secure fit
  • Check wiring harness routing for chafing, damage, or recent service access points
  • Check for related customer complaints (when it occurs, after water exposure, etc.)
  • Use a scan tool to command the chime (if supported) and watch for a response

Signal parameters

  • Chime driver output: switches between ~0 V and battery voltage (0–12 V) or uses a PWM tone when active
  • Speaker/piezo continuity: expected low resistance (speaker coil typically a few ohms; piezo may show different impedance)
  • No-chime condition: driver output may remain at steady 0 V or constant value when a chime should be present
  • Intermittent: output may pulse inconsistently or show irregular waveform on an oscilloscope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs from BCM and instrument cluster. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault to confirm persistence.
  2. Verify customer symptom and the conditions that cause it (ignition state, doors open/closed, seatbelt status).
  3. Inspect and test fuses for continuity related to interior/BCM circuits; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  4. Visually inspect the chime speaker (under dash/centre console) and connectors. Unplug, inspect terminals for corrosion, secure connector and wiggle to check for intermittent behavior.
  5. Measure continuity between the chime speaker terminals and the BCM/cluster connector. Repair any open or shorted wiring.
  6. With a multimeter or lab scope, command the chime from a scan tool (if available) and measure the driver output at the module and at the speaker while triggering the chime. Compare voltages/waveforms to expected behavior.
  7. If the chime driver output is correct at the module but the speaker shows no response and speaker continuity is out of range, replace the speaker.
  8. If the speaker is good but there is no or incorrect driver output at the module, check module power, ground, and network communications. Inspect BCM/instrument cluster connectors and wiring for damage or corrosion.
  9. If wiring and connectors are good and the BCM/cluster fails to drive the chime correctly, consider module reprogramming or replacement following manufacturer procedures. Confirm repair by re-running diagnostics and verifying chime operation under all relevant conditions.
  10. After repair, clear stored codes and road test or reproduce activation conditions to ensure the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Disconnected or corroded connector at the chime speaker or instrument cluster
  • Damaged speaker (open voice coil or piezo failure)
  • Blown fuse in interior convenience circuit
  • Open/short in harness between BCM and speaker
  • Intermittent BCM output due to internal failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Chime circuit fault detected (C1935). Possible open, short, or no response from chime speaker/driver; requires wiring, connector, speaker, or module verification.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.5 hours
