Parking brake applies and releases switch contacts simultaneously energized

Causes

  • Short between the apply and release switch circuits (power or ground short)
  • Damaged/contaminated parking brake (EPB/handbrake) switch or sensor assembly
  • Faulty wiring harness or connector (corrosion, broken wire, chafing)
  • Incorrect or poor repair/aftermarket switch installation
  • Faulty instrument cluster / brake control module or internal module fault
  • Intermittent connector contact from moisture or vibration

Symptoms

  • Parking brake / EPB warning lamp illuminated
  • Parking brake may not release or may not apply correctly
  • Fault messages on dash related to parking brake or braking system
  • Vehicle may refuse to shift out of park (interlock) on some models
  • Intermittent or persistent diagnostic trouble code stored

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze-frame and live data with a diagnostic scanner; confirm C1989 and any related codes
  • Attempt to operate parking brake while monitoring apply/release switch states in live data
  • Visually inspect parking brake switch connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or moisture
  • Backprobe switch connector and wiggle harness while observing live data for intermittent changes
  • Measure voltage/continuity of individual switch wires at the switch and at the control module
  • Check for recent repairs or parts replacement in EPB or wiring that may have introduced errors

Signal parameters

  • Apply switch: closed = continuity to ground or logic low (near 0 Ω / 0 V depending on design); open = high/OL or battery voltage
  • Release switch: closed = continuity to ground or logic low (near 0 Ω / 0 V depending on design); open = high/OL or battery voltage
  • Typical signal levels at module inputs: 0–1 V for asserted, ~12 V or open-circuit for deasserted on switched 12 V circuits; some modules use 0–5 V logic—refer to model-specific wiring
  • Expected resistance: near 0 Ω when a switch is closed, infinite/OL when open (measure with battery disconnected)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to read DTCs and live data. Note any related codes (ABS, EPB, body module). Record when the code set and any freeze frame data.
  2. Visually inspect parking brake switch assembly, connector and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture or pinched wires. Repair obvious wiring damage.
  3. With ignition on (engine off) backprobe the apply and release switch circuits at the switch connector. Operate the parking brake and observe scanner values and multimeter to confirm only the expected circuit changes state.
  4. If both circuits are energized simultaneously at the switch connector, replace the parking brake switch assembly. If the fault is only present at the module connector, inspect/repair harness between switch and module.
  5. Perform continuity and short-to-power/short-to-ground checks between the two switch circuits and between each circuit and chassis ground/battery positive. Repair any shorts or wiring faults found.
  6. If wiring and switch check good, verify control module input voltages at the module connector. If module inputs show both circuits energized despite good switch/wiring, consider module fault or software; consult technical service bulletins and manufacturer procedures.
  7. After repairs, clear codes and perform full function test: cycle parking brake apply/release multiple times and monitor live data for correct behaviour. Road test if required to confirm fault does not return.
  8. If intermittent, secure wiring, replace connectors or apply dielectric grease as required and re-check over longer test drive or repeated cycles.

Likely causes

  • Water ingress or corrosion at the parking brake switch connector
  • Pinched or chafed wiring causing the two switch circuits to short
  • Failed parking brake switch assembly (internal short)
  • Faulty body/control module interpreting signals incorrectly

Fault status
