Failure in continuous operation in the dynamic stability control

Causes

  • Faulty DSC/ABS control module
  • Intermittent or failed wheel speed sensor(s)
  • Yaw rate or lateral acceleration sensor fault
  • Steering angle sensor fault or mis-calibration
  • Loss of CAN/vehicle network communication to DSC module
  • Low or unstable battery/vehicle voltage or poor ground

Symptoms

  • DSC/ESP warning lamp illuminated on instrument cluster
  • ABS or traction control functions reduced or disabled
  • Possible illumination of multiple chassis-related warning lights
  • Loss of DSC intervention (vehicle may not apply selective braking)
  • Stored related DTCs in ABS/DSC module
  • Erratic or unavailable speedometer/wheel speed readings (in some cases)

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data from ABS/DSC and gateway modules using a capable diagnostic tool
  • Check for additional network (U0xxx) codes indicating CAN communication loss
  • Visual inspection of ABS/DSC module, connectors and wiring for corrosion, moisture or damage
  • Check battery state of charge and charging system voltage (stable ~12.6 V engine off, ~13.5–14.5 V running)
  • Verify ABS/DSC fuses and power/ground circuits are present and secure
  • Inspect wheel speed sensor connectors and tone rings for contamination, damage or air gaps

Signal parameters

  • Wheel speed sensors — raw speed and plausibility across all four wheels (should be similar at steady speed)
  • Yaw rate sensor — angle rate vs vehicle speed and steering input (should correlate)
  • Steering angle sensor — steering wheel angle and rate, calibration status
  • Lateral acceleration sensor — output consistent with cornering inputs
  • Brake pressure sensor or wheel brake pressure (if available)
  • ABS/DSC module supply voltage and ground voltages

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool and download DTCs and freeze-frame; note event conditions (speed, steering, voltage).
  2. Verify battery charge and charging system; charge battery if low and re-run tests.
  3. Inspect all DSC/ABS module power, ground, fuses and relays; repair any poor connections.
  4. Perform visual inspection of wiring/connectors at ABS module and each wheel sensor; repair corrosion or damage.
  5. Monitor live data: check all four wheel speeds while rotating wheels (or test drive) to identify missing or implausible sensor signals.
  6. Check yaw rate and steering angle sensors for correlation; perform steering angle sensor calibration if required by the manufacturer.
  7. Check CAN-bus communication to DSC; measure CAN high/low voltages and ensure messages from other modules are present.
  8. If a specific sensor is faulty, test or replace the sensor and retest. For intermittent faults, backprobe connectors and wiggle harness while monitoring live data to reproduce fault.
  9. If wiring and sensors are good but module shows internal failures, check for software updates or manufacturer technical bulletins; reflash module software if recommended.
  10. Clear codes and perform a controlled test drive with diagnostic logger active to confirm fault does not return. If the code returns, escalate to module replacement per manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector at DSC/ABS module or wheel harness
  • Single wheel speed sensor providing implausible signal
  • Yaw rate sensor out of range or uncalibrated after service
  • Intermittent CAN-bus connection to DSC module
  • Low battery voltage during module self-test

Fault status

⚠️ Status
DSC continuous operation failure — stability control detected an internal/sensor or communication fault and may be operating in a degraded mode.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
