Causes

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a capable Land Rover diagnostic tool.
  • Check for other communication DTCs (U-codes) present in networked modules.
  • Visually inspect CCM connectors and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, damage, or moisture.
  • Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system health; ensure battery voltage is stable.
  • Verify fuses and relays feeding the CCM are intact and correct rating.
  • Measure power and ground at the CCM connector for correct voltages and low resistance.

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at CCM: should be ~12–14.5 V with engine off/on as appropriate.
  • Ground resistance:
  • CAN High/Low differential idle voltage: ~2.5 V midpoint, ~2.5 V/2.5 V with ± differential on traffic.
  • CAN bus traffic: valid periodic messages from other modules and CCM when operational.
  • Module self-test/monitor status codes, internal error counters (if accessible).
  • Module software/part number and calibration version reported by diagnostic tool.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect diagnostic tool. Read and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data from CCM and other modules. Note any communication (U) codes.
  2. Clear the C1A02 code and perform a key-cycle and re-scan to see if the code returns (check for intermittent faults).
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the CCM and harness. Look for corrosion, damage, evidence of water ingress, or loose connectors.
  4. Verify battery voltage and charging system. Charge or replace weak battery before further testing.
  5. Check fuses/relays feeding the CCM; replace if suspect and re-test.
  6. Backprobe CCM power and ground pins. Confirm correct supply voltage and low-resistance ground under load.
  7. Check CAN bus integrity: verify continuity, resistance, and check for short to power/ground. Use an oscilloscope to confirm proper differential waveform and message activity.
  8. If power/ground/CAN wiring and connectors are OK, attempt a software reflash or ECU reset using the manufacturer diagnostic tool and known-good calibration.
  9. If the fault persists after reflash and wiring checks, consider module replacement. Ensure replacement module is compatible and fully programmed/configured to vehicle.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform relearns/calibrations as required, and road-test to confirm the fault does not return.
