Electronic Parking Brake Caliper Motor - Circuit Fault

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or short in caliper motor supply or ground circuit
  • Corroded or loose connector at caliper
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, water ingress, pinched)
  • Failed caliper motor (internal fault or seized motor)
  • Faulty EPB control module or driver transistor
  • Blown fuse or failed relay in EPB power feed

Symptoms

  • EPB warning lamp or message on dash
  • Unable to apply or release the electronic parking brake
  • Audible clicking/straining from caliper when commanded
  • One or more wheels showing EPB not released in vehicle data
  • Vehicle may inhibit drive or show additional related fault messages
  • Multiple fault codes stored for EPB/caliper circuit

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scan tool to read all related EPB and body control module codes and live data
  • Check for associated codes (other calipers or CAN/communication errors)
  • Visually inspect caliper connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or water entry
  • Check fuse(s) and relay(s) supplying the EPB system
  • With key on and using a scope or multimeter, check battery voltage at the caliper power pin while commanding the EPB
  • Inspect and wiggle harness while watching live data for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Battery feed to caliper: approx. vehicle battery voltage ~11–14 V when key on (verify under command)
  • Motor current draw: expected low when free-running, can peak during operation — typically up to several amps (measure with clamp meter)
  • Motor coil resistance: low ohm range (measure with multimeter, consult service data for exact value)
  • Control signal: on some systems motor driver is switched/PWM from EPB module — observe switching on scope when commanded
  • CAN/vehicle data: EPB status messages should change when commanded; check for communication faults

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and record all EPB/ABS/body module codes and freeze-frame data
  2. Attempt a raw actuator command to apply and release the EPB while watching live data and listening for motor action
  3. Visually inspect caliper connector and harness; unplug and inspect for corrosion, bent pins, and moisture
  4. With caliper disconnected, measure motor coil resistance and compare to service spec
  5. With a powered clamp meter or ammeter in series, command the motor and measure current draw for signs of overload or no current
  6. Probe caliper connector power and ground while commanding to confirm battery voltage and switching; check for intermittent voltage loss when flexing harness
  7. Check fuses, relays and module power/ground circuits; repair any high-resistance connections
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but actuator does not operate or shows abnormal current/ resistance, replace the affected caliper assembly
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform any required relearns or calibrations with the scan tool, then road-test and recheck for stored faults

Likely causes

  • Intermittent or permanent open/short to caliper motor connector
  • Water/dirt contamination causing connector corrosion
  • High resistance connection (loose terminal) causing voltage drop
  • Motor has high current draw when commanded (internal mechanical binding)
  • Module driver failed and cannot power actuator

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Electronic Parking Brake caliper motor circuit fault detected. Electrical fault in caliper motor circuit may prevent proper application or release of the parking brake. Inspect wiring, connector, power/ground and caliper motor.
