Causes

  • Corrupted or malformed CAN/FlexRay/LIN message from a module
  • Intermittent or failed module (hardware or firmware)
  • Wiring harness damage, short, open or poor connection on communication bus
  • Insufficient or unstable supply voltage/ground to a module
  • Missing or incorrect module software/calibration
  • Faulty network termination or excessive bus reflections/noise

Symptoms

  • Illuminated warning lamp(s) related to the affected module(s)
  • Loss or intermittent loss of function for affected control units (e.g., instrument cluster, ABS, traction, HVAC)
  • Multiple communications-related DTCs present
  • Erratic module behavior, frozen gauges or inaccurate readings
  • Possible no-start or limp-home modes if critical module affected

What to check

  • Retrieve full freeze frame and all stored DTCs from all modules with a Land Rover-level scan tool
  • Note which module reported C1A46 and which module(s) are communicating with it
  • Check battery voltage and ground integrity at time of code occurrence
  • Visually inspect communication connectors, terminals and wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Measure CAN bus differential voltage (idle and during data) at module connector and at gateway
  • Check for missing terminating resistors and measure bus impedance

Signal parameters

  • CAN High/Low differential voltage (nominal ~2.5V idle, ~1V swing)
  • Bus idle voltages at module connector
  • Message IDs and payloads from implicated module(s)
  • Bus error counters (TX/RX error counters) and CAN bus load (%)
  • Message frequency and timing for expected PDUs
  • CRC/checksum and sequence counters in message payload (if applicable)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a Land Rover-capable diagnostic tool and read all modules, record all communication-related codes and module IDs.
  2. Attempt to clear codes and reproduce. Note if code returns immediately, intermittently, or only under certain conditions.
  3. Inspect visible wiring, connectors and grounds for the reporting module and any adjacent modules. Repair obvious damage.
  4. Verify battery voltage and charge state. Clean and tighten battery and chassis grounds.
  5. Using a lab scope or multimeter, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the affected module connector: verify idle voltages, differential, and signal integrity while exercising the system.
  6. Check bus termination resistance (should be approx. 60 ohms across CAN H-L with key on) and look for splices or aftermarket devices that may load the bus.
  7. If signals are noisy, isolate segments by disconnecting modules one at a time (where safe) to identify the offending node.
  8. Confirm module programming/software level. Reflash or reprogram the module if software is out of date or corrupted (follow manufacturer procedure).
  9. If module hardware (transceiver) is suspected, swap with known-good module only when allowed by vehicle security and coding rules, or bench-test the module per factory guidance.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform a full system scan; road test or cycle conditions to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector pins or corroded ground near the implicated module
  • Failed CAN transceiver on the sending or receiving module
  • Recent software update or module replacement with wrong calibration
  • Intermittent open/short in CAN high/low pair or shield damage
  • Weak battery or poor battery connections causing corrupted frames

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Invalid data received from control module over vehicle network (message format, checksum or timing out of expected range).
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.5 hours
