Control Module Internal Fault

Causes

  • Internal hardware failure (processor, memory, solder joint, power regulator)
  • Corrupted or failed module software/firmware
  • Intermittent or missing power supply (battery/fuse/ignition feed)
  • Bad ground or high-resistance ground connection
  • CAN/LIN bus or communication errors affecting module operation
  • Water ingress, corrosion or physical damage to module or connector

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or warning message(s) illuminated
  • Loss of communication with the affected module on a diagnostic tool
  • Intermittent or complete loss of the functions controlled by that module
  • Unexpected resets or erratic behavior of related systems
  • Vehicle may default to limp-mode for affected systems

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data from all modules
  • Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system (12–14.5 V with key on)
  • Inspect module connectors and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water or damage
  • Check fuses and ignition-switched power feed(s) to the module
  • Verify good chassis and engine ground(s) and measure ground resistance
  • Measure supply voltage at the module connector with key on

Signal parameters

  • Module battery/ignition supply: approximately 11–14.5 V (verify exact spec in service manual)
  • Cranking voltage should not drop below specification (typically >9 V) during starter engagement
  • Ground resistance to chassis: low (
  • CAN bus idle voltages: approximately 2.5 V on CAN H and CAN L (confirm with manufacturer specs)
  • CAN differential voltage during data: expected dynamic changes per protocol (use scope/diagnostic tool)
  • Module internal self-test status flags or flash integrity status (if available via dealer tool)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and save all active and historical codes and freeze-frame data from the affected and all networked modules.
  2. Confirm battery voltage and system voltage stability (key on, engine off and during cranking). Recharge or replace battery if low.
  3. Visually inspect the module and harness: look for water ingress, corrosion, pest damage, crushed wires, or heat damage.
  4. Check and verify power and ground circuits at the module connector: check fuses, measure pin voltages with key on, and measure ground resistance to chassis.
  5. Verify bus communications: check CAN/LIN idle voltages, continuity, and proper termination. Repair wiring faults before further module work.
  6. If supplies and communications are correct, attempt to clear the code and perform a key cycle. Verify whether the fault returns and capture any new freeze-frame data.
  7. Check for available software updates, re-flash or reprogram the module per Land Rover repair procedures if a firmware/software issue is suspected.
  8. If fault persists after software reflash and wiring checks, consider module bench testing or swap with a known-good module (if available) to confirm internal fault.
  9. If module replacement is required, follow manufacturer procedures for part replacement and mandatory programming/coding. Verify repair by re-scanning and road testing.
  10. Document findings and retention of replaced module per local regulations (some modules must be returned or retained for warranty/diagnostic purposes).

Likely causes

  • Corrupted flash memory or failed firmware update
  • Open/shorted ignition-switched power feed or blown fuse servicing the module
  • Poor ground connection at module chassis ground point
  • CAN bus termination fault or short to battery/ground on CAN H or CAN L
  • Internal component failure due to age, heat or contamination

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Control Module Internal Fault — module detected an internal hardware or software failure and logged an internal error. Module may not respond to diagnostics or may operate intermittently.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.0 hours
