Causes
- Short to battery or other high-voltage source in sensor signal/wiring
- Faulty lateral acceleration (G) sensor
- Open or high-resistance ground or reference supply for the sensor
- Damaged or corroded connector or wiring (chafing, pin pushed out)
- Faulty control module (ECU/ABS/airbag module) input circuit
- Intermittent wiring fault (intermittent high voltage spikes)
Symptoms
- Stability control/ESP or ABS warning lamp illuminated
- Traction control or stability functions reduced or disabled
- Diagnostic trouble code C1A68 (Lateral Acceleration Sensor Circuit High Voltage) stored
- Possible unexpected ABS/ESC behavior during cornering
- Vehicle may enter limp or degraded stability mode
What to check
- Scan for stored codes and freeze frame data; record live lateral acceleration values
- Visual inspection of sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or pin issues
- Check sensor connector mates correctly and is fully seated
- Measure sensor supply (reference) voltage and ground at the sensor connector with key ON
- Measure sensor output voltage at rest and during controlled side-to-side movement
- Wiggle the wiring harness while monitoring live data to reproduce the fault
Signal parameters
- Sensor supply/reference: typically 5.0 V or 3.3 V (verify OEM spec)
- Sensor ground: near 0 V (low resistance to chassis ground)
- Expected sensor output idle (0 g lateral): around mid-rail (e.g., ~2.5 V for ±2.5 V half-bridge style) or 0.5–4.5 V full-scale — verify OEM documentation
- Maximum expected output: usually < supply voltage (no greater than ~4.8–5.0 V on a 5 V system)
- Typical lateral acceleration range: ±2 to ±3 g (vehicle dependent)
- Typical sample/update rate: tens to hundreds of Hz (varies by vehicle/ECU)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve freeze frame/live data and all related codes (ABS, airbag, stability modules). Note sensor output voltage/values at rest.
- Visually inspect sensor, mounting, and wiring harness for damage, pin corrosion, water intrusion, or loose connector.
- With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe sensor connector: verify reference supply voltage (5 V or 3.3 V) and ground continuity to chassis. If ref supply is over spec, stop and trace source.
- Measure sensor output voltage at connector with no motion. If output is above expected maximum (near or at supply voltage), suspect short to power or failed sensor.
- Wiggle and flex harness while watching live output and DTC status to locate intermittent shorts or opens.
- If wiring looks bad or suspect short to battery, isolate by disconnecting sensor. Measure voltage on the sensor harness signal pin with sensor disconnected. If high voltage remains on harness, trace back toward the module, checking connectors and splice points.
- If harness signal is normal when disconnected and sensor output is still high when connected, replace sensor (or swap with known-good sensor if available) and retest.
- If harness and sensor check OK, check input circuit at the receiving control module (abs/stability/airbag). Check for PCM/ABS module updates or known service bulletins. Replace module only after confirming upstream wiring and sensor are good.
- Use an oscilloscope if available to check for spikes/noise on supply and signal lines under static and dynamic conditions.
- After repair, clear codes and perform a road test or dynamic test to verify the fault does not return and that sensor outputs track lateral acceleration correctly.
Likely causes
- Wiring shorted to battery or powered circuit (most likely)
- Failed lateral acceleration sensor
- Poor ground or 5V/3.3V reference supply fault
- Connector corrosion or pin damage at sensor or module
