Causes

  • Module internal software or firmware error
  • Corrupted module memory or calibration data
  • Intermittent or low battery/vehicle supply voltage
  • Poor ground or connector corrosion/damage
  • CAN/LIN bus communication errors or shorted wiring
  • Water ingress or physical damage to the module or connector

Symptoms

  • Corresponding system warning lamp(s) illuminated (depends on faulty module)
  • Loss or degradation of the system(s) controlled by the affected module
  • Diagnostic tool shows the C1A87 code and possibly other related codes
  • Intermittent faults or functions that fail only after vehicle has been running or after reboot
  • Inability to communicate with the module over the diagnostic network

What to check

  • Connect a Land Rover–capable diagnostic tool and read full DTC list and freeze-frame data
  • Identify which control module reported C1A87 (module address/name)
  • Check battery voltage (key ON, engine OFF and while cranking)
  • Inspect module connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, water ingress, loose pins
  • Attempt to communicate with the module using OEM diagnostic tool — note any communication errors
  • Check for related network codes (U-codes) that indicate CAN/LIN bus issues

Signal parameters

  • Battery/supply voltage at module (Key ON, engine OFF)
  • Ground continuity/resistance to chassis ground
  • CAN High / CAN Low idle voltages and differential voltage
  • Presence/absence of expected CAN frames for the module (bus activity)
  • Module wake/sleep state and response to wake command
  • Freeze frame values logged with the code (operating conditions)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM diagnostic tool and note full DTC list, freeze frame and module identifier
  2. Confirm which control module set C1A87 and attempt to communicate repeatedly to determine intermittent vs permanent lack of comms
  3. Check vehicle battery condition and operating voltage; restore correct battery voltage if low and re-scan
  4. Visually inspect module, mounting area and connector for corrosion, water, damage or loose pins; repair or reseat connector as needed
  5. Check ground continuity from module ground to chassis and vehicle negative; repair any high-resistance ground
  6. Verify CAN/LIN wiring integrity: inspect harness, backshells and splice points; use an oscilloscope or CAN diagnostic tool to check for proper voltages and valid frames
  7. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; if code returns immediately or under the same conditions proceed
  8. If wiring, power and grounds are good, check for software/firmware updates and reflash or reprogram the module per OEM procedure
  9. If reprogramming fails or code persists after correct power/ground and communication, follow OEM guidance for module bench testing or replacement
  10. After repair or reprogram, clear codes, confirm no additional codes, and perform relevant functional tests and road test

Likely causes

  • Loss of supply voltage or intermittent battery connection
  • Poor ground at module connector or chassis ground
  • CAN bus wiring fault or short to battery/ground
  • Module software corruption requiring reflash
  • Connector corrosion or water intrusion at the module harness
  • Recent module replacement not programmed to vehicle

Fault status

⚠️ Status
