Causes

  • Faulty steering angle sensor (SAS)
  • Poor power or ground to the sensor
  • Damaged wiring or corroded connector
  • CAN/LIN communication error or bus interference
  • Sensor not calibrated or lost calibration after steering work
  • Related ECU (ABS/ESP/steering) fault or software issue

Symptoms

  • ESP/traction control warning lamp illuminated
  • Steering assist or stability functions reduced/disabled
  • Possible steering warning message in dash
  • Fault code stored; intermittent or permanent
  • Inconsistent steering wheel angle readout in diagnostics vs actual wheel position

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full fault list with a dealer-level scan tool
  • Check live steering angle values and compare to physical wheel position
  • Verify related sensor data (yaw rate, wheel speeds) for plausibility
  • Inspect steering angle sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Measure supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector with ignition on
  • Check CAN/LIN bus health and error counters with a scan tool or oscilloscope

Signal parameters

  • Steering angle output (degrees) — should track physically rotating steering wheel
  • Rate of change (degrees/sec) — should be within plausible limits for driver input
  • Signal format: voltage/analog or digital/CAN message depending on model
  • Checksum or message integrity flags on CAN/LIN frames
  • Supply voltage to sensor (approx. vehicle battery voltage when ON) and solid ground
  • Typical mechanical range: multiple turns of steering wheel (manufacturer dependent; commonly ±720° to ±1080°)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve C2008 and any related codes; note freeze-frame and occurrence count.
  2. With a scan tool, monitor steering angle live data while turning the steering wheel and compare to actual wheel position; check yaw rate and wheel speed agreement.
  3. Visually inspect the SAS connector and wiring harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or water damage; repair as needed.
  4. Measure sensor supply voltage and ground at the connector with ignition ON; verify stable battery voltage.
  5. Check CAN/LIN communication for errors: inspect bus wiring, termination, modules on same bus, and use an oscilloscope if available to confirm message integrity.
  6. If wiring and power are good, perform sensor self-test/calibration using dealer-level diagnostic tool or procedure; recheck fault status.
  7. If implausible values persist after calibration, swap or bench-test the steering angle sensor if possible; replace sensor if confirmed faulty.
  8. After replacement or repair, perform calibration, clear codes, and road test to confirm the fault does not return and related systems operate normally.
  9. If fault remains, pursue module-level diagnostics (ABS/ESP/steering ECU) or software reflash as per factory procedures.

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector or damaged harness at the steering angle sensor
  • Failed steering angle sensor (internal electronics)
  • Loss of sensor calibration (steering wheel not centered after repairs)
  • CAN bus fault causing corrupted or missing SAS messages
  • Low battery/unstable supply voltage to control modules

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Implausible steering angle signal detected — stored by vehicle control module. May be active or intermittent; verify live data and freeze-frame to determine current status.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
