Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Control Fault

Causes
- Low or unstable battery voltage
- Blown ABS fuse or failed relay
- Poor or corroded power/ground connections to ABS module
- Faulty wheel speed sensor(s) or damaged sensor tone ring
- Damaged wiring harness or connector to ABS module
- Faulty ABS control module (internal fault)
Symptoms
- ABS warning light illuminated on dash
- Traction/stability control warning lamp may also be on
- ABS may be disabled — no ABS operation during hard braking
- Longer stopping distance under hard braking on slippery surfaces
- Intermittent or permanent loss of traction control functionality
- Diagnostic trouble codes stored in ABS or body control module
What to check
- Read ABS and related module codes with a capable scanner; record freeze-frame data
- Check vehicle battery voltage and charging system (key on and engine running)
- Inspect ABS fuses and relays; verify continuity and correct operation
- Visual inspection of ABS module connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose pins
- Check chassis and module ground connections for tightness and corrosion
- Scan CAN bus for communication errors or other modules reporting faults
Signal parameters
- Module supply voltage: steady ~12 V (key ON); not less than 11.5 V during cranking/operation
- Module ground: near 0 ohms to chassis (low resistance)
- CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5–3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5–2.5 V; differential ~0 V when idle? (expect ~2.5 V common-mode; proper differential behavior during traffic)
- Wheel speed (active sensor): 0–5 V square/pulse output proportional to wheel speed
- Wheel speed (passive/variable reluctance): AC voltage amplitude and frequency increase with speed (mV to volts depending on speed)
- ABS pump current draw: varies by vehicle; compare to specification (no unusually high stall current)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a full-function scan tool and read all stored and pending ABS and network codes; note freeze-frame and occurrence frequency
- Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system; charge battery to full and retest if low
- Inspect and test ABS fuses and relays; replace if suspect and clear codes
- Visually inspect ABS module and sensor connectors for damage, corrosion, or water ingress; repair as needed
- Check and clean ground points for ABS module and main chassis grounds; measure voltage drop while cranking and during ABS module operation
- Backprobe wheel speed sensor circuits; measure sensor output while rotating each wheel (compare left/right and specified ranges)
- Perform wiggle tests on harnesses while monitoring live sensor data and for code reappearance to find intermittent opens/shorts
- Check CAN bus communication to ABS module with scope or scanner; verify module responds to tool; if no response, check bus termination and continuity
- Use bi-directional control to command ABS pump and valves (if supported) to confirm hydraulic unit operation; measure pump current and compare to spec
- If wiring, sensors, fuses, and grounds check good and CAN communications are present but fault persists, consider module software update or replacement per manufacturer procedure; follow proper programming/initialization
- After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test with scanner connected to verify no reoccurrence and that ABS functions correctly
Likely causes
- Battery voltage below 11.5 V during key-on or while driving
- Loose or corroded ground at ABS module or chassis
- Intermittent open/short in wheel speed sensor wiring
- ABS module not receiving CAN bus communications
- Failed pump motor or internal ABS hydraulic valve fault
- Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying ABS module power
Fault status
Status
ABS Control Fault (C2250): ABS control module detected a fault. ABS/traction functions may be disabled until repaired.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1-3 hours
