Suspension Control Module Communication Fault

Causes
- Faulty or intermittent wiring/connectors between SCM and CAN bus
- Corroded or loose connector pins at the SCM
- Blown fuse or lost ignition/switched power to SCM
- Poor ground at the SCM or related modules
- CAN bus short to battery or ground, or open circuit
- Missing or incorrect termination resistor(s) on CAN bus
Symptoms
- Suspension warning or service light illuminated on the dash
- Reduced or disabled active suspension functions (ride height, damping)
- Diagnostic trouble codes stored for SCM and related modules
- Intermittent warnings or message alerts about communications
- Vehicle may go into limp/safe mode for suspension system
- Possible abnormal ride height or harsh/soft ride behavior
What to check
- Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
- Check for related network codes (U-codes) that indicate bus problems
- Verify battery voltage (11–14.5 V) and charging system operation
- Visually inspect SCM connector and wiring for corrosion, pins pushed out, or damage
- Check fuses and power feeds to the SCM (ignition-switched and constant power)
- Verify good chassis and module ground connections
Signal parameters
- Vehicle battery voltage at SCM power input: nominal 11–14.5 V with ignition on
- Module ground near 0 V (measure for low resistance to chassis ground)
- CAN bus idle (recessive) voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V
- CAN bus dominant state (during message): CAN_H typically ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (differential ~2.0 V)
- Expected CAN bus baud rates commonly 250 kb/s or 500 kb/s depending on vehicle
- Termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L ≈ 60 ohms (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool and read all current and pending DTCs and freeze frame data. Note related U-codes or multiple module faults.
- Attempt to communicate with SCM using OEM-level tool; record which modules respond and which do not.
- Verify battery voltage and good ignition-switched power to the SCM. Check fuses feeding the module and replace if blown.
- Inspect the SCM connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, or physical damage. Repair or replace connector as required.
- Verify solid ground(s) for the SCM with resistance test to chassis ground. Clean and secure grounds if high resistance is found.
- Measure CAN_H and CAN_L DC voltages at the SCM connector with ignition ON and compare to expected values. If out of range, isolate wiring to find short/open.
- Check CAN bus continuity and termination resistance (expect ~60 Ω across CAN_H/CAN_L). Disconnect modules as needed to isolate a shorted device or shorted branch.
- Use an oscilloscope to view CAN bus waveforms while attempting communication to identify noise, missing messages, bus-off conditions, or corrupted frames.
- If wiring and network appear good, verify SCM software/calibration level and reflash/update per OEM service procedure. Clear codes and retest.
- If fault persists after verifying wiring, power/ground, and software, consider replacing the SCM following OEM replacement and programming procedures. Verify repair by rechecking network communications and clearing codes.
Likely causes
- Loose or corroded connector at the suspension control module
- CAN high/low wiring damaged or shorted
- No power or bad ground at the SCM
- Network termination resistor open or shorted causing bus errors
- SCM software mismatch or failed module
