Causes

  • Failed steering angle sensor (internal fault)
  • Open, short or high-resistance wiring in sensor signal, reference or ground circuits
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the sensor or control module
  • Intermittent connection from steering column movement (broken wire in harness)
  • Loss of reference voltage or ground at sensor
  • Faulty ABS/ESC/steering control module or poor module connection

Symptoms

  • ESC/traction control or ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Steering angle reading incorrect or not available on scan tool
  • Intermittent or constant stability control intervention (unexpected braking or torque reduction)
  • Adaptive cruise, lane-keep or other driver-assist faults or disabled
  • Possible reduced steering assist behavior or inconsistent steering response

What to check

  • Read stored freeze-frame data and all related codes from ABS/ESC/EPS modules
  • Visually inspect sensor connector and wiring along steering column for damage, corrosion, pin push-out or chafing
  • Check for open/short between sensor connector pins and corresponding module pins (continuity/ resistance)
  • With key on, measure sensor reference voltage (usually ~5 V) and ground at sensor connector
  • Backprobe signal wire while slowly turning steering wheel to observe voltage change or waveform with a DVM/oscilloscope
  • Check CAN or module communication using a scan tool: verify steering angle PID updates and compare to actual wheel position

Signal parameters

  • Typical reference voltage: ~5.0 V (verify vehicle-specific)
  • Typical signal (analog sensor): center ≈2.5 V with ±range (often ~0.5–4.5 V) as wheel turns — varies with model
  • Digital/encoder sensors: two-channel (A/B) square wave signals with 90° phase shift or a digital angle value over CAN — expect consistent frequency/sequence when steering moves
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis ground (
  • Live update rate: sensor/CAN updates multiple times per second (varies by vehicle) — lack of updates indicates communication or sensor failure

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool. Read C2376 and any additional codes from ABS/ESC/EPS and body modules. Record freeze-frame and live steering angle PID.
  2. Visually inspect the steering column area, sensor and connector for damage, corrosion, bent pins or harness chafing. Repair obvious issues.
  3. With ignition on, backprobe reference, signal and ground pins at the sensor connector. Verify ~5 V reference and solid ground. If reference or ground missing, trace wiring back to source and repair.
  4. Observe signal voltage while slowly turning the steering wheel through center to full lock. Analog sensor should change smoothly through center (~2.5 V). If reading is stuck, jumps, or is noisy, suspect sensor or broken wiring.
  5. If digital encoder, use oscilloscope to verify A/B channels produce clean square waves with phase shift or verify CAN steering angle messages update with wheel movement.
  6. Perform continuity and resistance tests from sensor connector to ABS/ESC module to locate opens or shorts, flexing the column/harness to reproduce intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good and sensor outputs are out of specification, replace the steering angle sensor. After replacement, perform/confirm steering angle sensor calibration/zeroing using scan tool per manufacturer procedure.
  8. Clear codes and test drive; re-scan to confirm fault does not return. If C2376 persists with correct sensor signals, investigate ABS/ESC module and CAN bus for internal faults or software issues and consider module reprogramming or replacement per manufacturer guidance.

  • Sensor internal failure (common wear or moisture intrusion)
  • Poor ground or lost 5 V reference to sensor
  • Sensor requires recalibration after battery replacement or steering work
