Chassis Control Module Fault

AI status

Completed
100%
Causes
- Faulty chassis control module (hardware/software)
- Loss of power or poor battery/ignition supply to module
- Poor ground connection at module
- Damaged wiring or corroded/loose connectors to CCM
- CAN/LIN bus communication fault or missing messages from other modules
- Blown fuse or relay feeding the CCM
Symptoms
- MIL/ABS/ESC/traction warning lamp illuminated or multiple warning lamps
- Loss or degradation of ABS, traction control, stability control, or related chassis assist functions
- Stored communication errors or multiple related DTCs present
- Intermittent or permanent loss of CCM-driven features (cruise, hill assist, etc.)
- Vehicle may enter limp or reduced functionality mode
- Erratic or unavailable sensor readings tied to chassis control
What to check
- Connect a professional scan tool and read all stored/active codes and freeze frame data
- Record VIN-specific and module-specific codes from CCM and related modules (ABS, BCM, ECM)
- Verify battery voltage and charging system (key on and cranking)
- Visually inspect CCM connector(s) and harness for corrosion, damage, rodent chew, or water intrusion
- Check fuses and relays related to the CCM power feed
- Use the scan tool to confirm CAN/LIN bus status and whether CCM is present/responding on the network
Signal parameters
- Module supply voltage (key ON): typically ~11–14.5 V — must meet manufacturer spec
- Ground continuity: low resistance between module ground and chassis (
- CAN bus idle/recessive voltage: each CAN line ~2.5 V (verify manufacturer spec) and correct differential behavior during activity
- CAN bus termination: overall bus impedance ~60 Ω across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
- Communication presence: module should respond to diagnostic requests and show alive messages/heartbeat on network trace
- Sensor input signals to CCM (wheel speed, yaw rate, steering angle) should be within expected ranges for the vehicle — compare to known-good traces
Diagnostic algorithm
- Read and log all codes from CCM and other modules; note freeze frame and occurrence counters
- Check battery state of charge and charging system; ensure stable supply voltage
- Inspect and secure CCM connectors; disconnect and re-pin-check for corrosion, bent pins, or water; clean and reconnect
- Verify and test fuses/relays feeding the CCM; replace if faulty
- Measure supply voltage and ground at the CCM connector with key ON/engine off and during cranking; repair poor connections
- Scan the CAN/LIN bus for communication faults. Use an oscilloscope or scope-capable scan tool to view CAN_H and CAN_L signals for proper recessive/dominant voltages and noise
- If communication is absent, trace harness for opens/shorts to other modules or termination resistors; repair wiring as needed
- Check related sensors (wheel speed, yaw, steering angle) for proper signals; repair or replace failing sensors if they cause CCM errors
- Clear codes and perform a test drive to confirm fault does not return after repairs
- If hardware, software or internal module fault is suspected after electrical checks, check for manufacturer reflash/recall/software update and program the CCM per factory procedure
- If module replacement is required, follow dealer/manufacturer procedures for configuration, coding, and security pairing; verify all related systems after replacement
Likely causes
- Poor power/ground at CCM (corrosion, loose terminal)
- Open/short or intermittent wiring on CAN bus or CCM harness
- Connector corrosion or bent pins at module or junction block
- Blown fuse or failed relay supplying CCM
- Software/firmware error or missing reflash after module replacement
Fault status
Status
CCM fault: module reported an internal fault or lost/erratic communication. Chassis control functions may be limited or disabled until cause is corrected.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.0 hours
