Causes

  • Open or shorted signal wiring between sensor and control module
  • Poor or intermittent connector contact (corrosion, bent pins, water ingress)
  • Failed steering angle sensor (internal electronics or potentiometer)
  • Damaged clockspring or steering column harness (wire break from wheel movement)
  • Incorrect sensor calibration, alignment, or software/module fault
  • Short to battery or ground, or poor sensor reference/ground

  • ABS, ESC or traction control warning lamp illuminated
  • Stability/traction control disabled or limited functionality
  • Steering angle live reading out of plausible range or no signal on scan tool
  • Vehicle may report off-center steering wheel or require recalibration
  • Intermittent faults that change with wheel movement or temperature

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and live data with a capable scan tool (steering angle, yaw rate, wheel speeds)
  • Clear codes and attempt to re-create fault while monitoring live signal
  • Visually inspect steering column, clockspring area, and sensor connector for damage/corrosion
  • Check fuses and power/ground to ABS/ESC module and steering angle sensor circuit
  • Wiggle test wiring while monitoring live data to look for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • Analog sensor: center ~2.5 V (typical), expected range ≈0.5–4.5 V depending on design; voltage should vary smoothly with wheel rotation
  • Redundant outputs (if present): two signals A/B should be 90° out of phase or complementary and show consistent, proportional change
  • Digital sensors: CAN/LIN messages should show steering angle value within vehicle-specific range (commonly ±720–1080°) and consistent update rate (10–100 Hz)
  • Reference voltage (if applicable): stable ~5 V (or vehicle reference) and good ground continuity

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool; record freeze frame and live steering angle and related sensors (yaw rate, wheel speeds)
  2. Confirm the fault: clear the code, exercise the steering through full range while monitoring sensor output for range, plausibility, and intermittency
  3. Visually inspect sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water ingress; pay attention to areas that flex (steering column, rubber gaiter)
  4. Backprobe sensor connector: verify reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground at key wheel positions (center, left lock, right lock). Compare to specified ranges
  5. Perform wiggle/turn tests on harness while watching live data to identify intermittent opens/shorts
  6. If signal is shorted to ground or battery, trace wiring for short and repair; if reference or ground missing, repair power/ground circuit
  7. If wiring and connectors are good but signal is implausible or flat, replace steering angle sensor (or clockspring assembly if integrated)
  8. After repair or sensor replacement, perform steering angle calibration/zeroing procedure per manufacturer and road test to confirm fault does not return
  9. If sensor and wiring check OK but communications issues persist, inspect CAN/LIN bus and ABS/ESC module for faults and update module software if applicable
