Causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty pump relay
  • Open or shorted wiring to ABS pump motor
  • Corroded or loose connector at pump or ABS module
  • Poor or missing ground to pump or module
  • Failed ABS pump motor (winding short/open)
  • Internal fault in ABS hydraulic control unit or motor driver

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp (and possibly traction/stability lamp) illuminated
  • ABS unavailable message or loss of ABS function
  • Pump motor runs continuously or fails to run during ABS events
  • Unusual noise from the pump (grinding/spinning) or no noise when expected
  • Possible altered brake pedal feel during ABS activation
  • Stored DTC C2601 and possibly related ABS/traction codes

What to check

  • Scan and record all ABS/traction codes and freeze frame data
  • Visual inspection of ABS pump, harness, connectors and grounds for corrosion, damage or water
  • Check fuses and pump/ABS relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Wiggle test wiring with connector disconnected and engine off to see if code or symptom changes
  • Measure supply voltage and ground at pump connector with ignition ON and while commanding pump via scan tool
  • Measure motor winding resistance (with battery disconnected) and compare to specification

Signal parameters

  • Pump supply voltage: typically battery voltage (~12 V) at the pump power terminal when relay/fuse is closed
  • Control signal: switched 12 V or PWM from ABS module — PWM frequency often in the 10s–100s Hz range (varies by manufacturer)
  • Motor current draw: expected to be low at idle and increase under load; excessive current (several amps above normal) indicates motor overload or short
  • Motor winding resistance: typically low (ohms), check manufacturer spec — open or very high resistance indicates an open winding

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all ABS/related codes and live data. Note freeze-frame conditions. Clear codes and attempt to re-create to confirm repeatability.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of pump, connector, wiring, relay and fuse. Repair obvious damage or corrosion, then re-scan.
  3. Verify fuses and relay operation. If suspect, swap with known good relay or bench-test the relay.
  4. With battery disconnected, measure motor winding resistance across pump terminals; compare to spec. Check for continuity to ground (should not be shorted).
  5. Reconnect battery. Back-probe pump connector. With ignition ON (engine off) and ABS commanded ON via a scan tool, measure supply voltage and any control/PWM signal. Confirm proper ground.
  6. If supply/control signals are present but pump does not run, bench-test the pump by applying fused 12 V directly to the motor to confirm motor operation (use caution and follow safety procedures).
  7. If pump runs when directly powered but not when commanded, suspect wiring or ABS module driver. Inspect harness for opens/shorts and repair as needed.
  8. If pump does not run on direct bench power or draws excessive current, replace the pump assembly.
  9. If wiring and pump check good, diagnose ABS module output driver (module repair or replacement may be required).
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform ABS self-tests and road test to confirm proper operation and that code does not return.

  • Open/short in harness or corroded connector at pump
  • Failed ABS pump motor drawing excessive current or open winding
  • Bad ground at chassis or module ground point
  • Failed motor driver inside the ABS control module
