Causes

Diagnostic algorithm

  2. Perform visual inspection: check harness, connector for corrosion, pin damage, and secure mounting of compressor and solenoid.
  3. Verify fuse(s) and relay(s) for the compressor circuit are present and making good contact.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to manufacturer spec. Replace solenoid if out of range.
  5. With connector connected, backprobe positive supply and ground terminal. Command the solenoid ON using a diagnostic tool and confirm correct voltage/ground is present.
  6. If commanded voltage/ground is absent, trace wiring back to the fuse/relay and control module; check for open, short to battery or ground, and poor connections.
  7. If wiring and supply are good but the solenoid does not operate, verify the control module output using scope or DVOM while commanding; look for PWM or switching action.
  8. If control module output is faulty, inspect for related wiring faults and grounds; replace control module only after ruling out wiring and load faults.
  9. After repair or component replacement, clear codes and perform a functional test and road/operation test to confirm the fault does not return.
  10. Document repair and advise recheck if intermittent faults continue (may require extended drive or environmental testing).
