Causes

  • Open, short to ground, or short to voltage in MAF B wiring or connector
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged MAF B connector pins
  • Faulty MAF sensor (B)
  • Contaminated or physically damaged MAF sensing element
  • Faulty PCM/ECM or internal driver fault
  • Intake air leaks or bypasses downstream/upstream that affect sensor operation (less common for pure circuit faults)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power, limp-home mode
  • Poor idle quality, stalling, or surging
  • Increased fuel consumption or black smoke on acceleration
  • Difficulty starting or extended crank times
  • Failed emissions test or elevated tailpipe pollutants

What to check

  • Read and record DTC(s) and freeze frame data; note conditions when code set
  • Visually inspect MAF B connector, pins and wiring for corrosion, damage, loose terminals
  • Inspect intake tract for leaks, disconnected hoses or bypasses
  • Check that MAF wiring is properly routed and not chafed or pinched
  • Verify reference voltage, ground, and signal at the sensor connector with ignition ON
  • Compare MAF B signal to MAF A (if present) or to known-good values while revving engine

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage typically ~5 V supply from ECM (verify exact value from OEM docs)
  • MAF signal (hot-wire) commonly outputs ~0.5–4.5 V depending on airflow (idle low, rises with RPM)
  • Heater element supply/control may be switched or PWM; heater current varies by design (check manufacturer spec)
  • Signal should be steady and proportional to airflow; intermittent drops to 0 V or stuck high indicate circuit fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame, all active/inactive codes and clear codes. Re-run engine to attempt to re-create P010A.
  2. Perform a detailed visual inspection of MAF B connector and wiring (airbox area to ECM). Repair any obvious damage.
  3. Back-probe connector with ignition ON: verify 5 V reference (if used), good chassis/ECM ground, and sensor signal present. Record values.
  4. With engine running, monitor live MAF B voltage/frequency. Look for plausible change with RPM and compare with MAF A or expected values.
  5. Wiggle harness and connector while monitoring live data to find intermittent opens/shorts.
  6. If power/ground are correct but signal is missing or implausible, disconnect sensor and check for short to ground/voltage on signal pin with multimeter.
  7. If wiring and supply are good, substitute a known-good MAF B sensor (or swap sensors if identical and safe) to verify sensor vs harness/ECM.
  8. If fault follows sensor replacement, continue to inspect harness for intermittent faults. If fault remains with known-good sensor and wiring verified, consider ECM driver fault—confirm with OEM diagnostic procedures before replacing ECM.
  9. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform road/test cycles and verify no reoccurrence and fuel trims/engine performance are normal.

Likely causes

  • Wiring damage near airbox or along harness (chafing, rodent bite)
  • Connector corrosion or bent pins at the MAF B plug
  • Failed MAF B sensor (heater or signal element)
  • Poor ground or missing reference voltage to the sensor
  • Intermittent harness connection (movement/wiggle sensitive)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
MIL illuminated; P010A stored in ECM fault memory. Freeze-frame and live-data available. Code may be pending or permanent depending on drive cycles and manufacturer-specific readiness logic.
