Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in injector 4 harness (to power or ground)
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged injector connector or pins
  • Failed fuel injector (coil short or open)
  • Faulty injector driver inside the ECM/PCM
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for the fuel injector circuit
  • Poor ground or battery supply voltage at injector

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration at idle
  • Single-cylinder misfire (cylinder 4) or engine misfire detected
  • Reduced engine power, hesitation or stumbling under load
  • Increased fuel consumption and emissions
  • Difficulty starting (if the injector is stuck open/closed)

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and live data with a scan tool to confirm P0204 and related codes
  • Visually inspect injector 4 connector, wiring harness and adjacent wiring for damage, corrosion or fluid ingress
  • Check engine and battery voltage; inspect fuses and fuel/ECU relays supplying injectors
  • Measure injector 4 coil resistance with meter (engine off, harness disconnected)
  • Backprobe injector 4 connector while cranking/running to verify supply voltage and ECU driver signal
  • Swap injector 4 with another cylinder’s injector (if identical) to see if code follows the injector

Signal parameters

  • Injector supply voltage: ~12 V (battery voltage) present at the constant power pin with ignition ON — consult vehicle spec
  • Injector driver signal: switched to ground by ECU; pulse 0–12 V or ground switching waveform during operation
  • Typical injector coil resistance (varies by vehicle): high-impedance ~10–18 Ω, low-impedance ~1–6 Ω — check Land Rover service spec
  • Injector pulse width: commonly 1–10 ms depending on load/engine speed (varies by operating condition)
  • Duty cycle: typically under ~60–70% in normal operation (consult service data for limits)
  • Scope waveform: clean square pulses; excessive noise, missing pulses, or stuck state indicates wiring/ECU fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the code with a diagnostic scan tool and record freeze-frame/live data. Note any related codes (misfire, low fuel pressure, ECM faults).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of injector 4 connector and harness for damage, corrosion, crushed wires or signs of overheating. Repair obvious damage.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect injector 4 and measure coil resistance with a multimeter. Compare to factory specification. Replace injector if resistance is out of range.
  4. Check for battery voltage at the injector supply pin (with ignition ON). No supply suggests fuse/relay/power feed issue — inspect and repair as required.
  5. Backprobe the injector connector while cranking/while running to confirm the ECU-driven signal. Use a noid light or oscilloscope to verify pulse presence, duration and waveform quality.
  6. Wiggle test wiring and connector while monitoring signal and engine behavior to find intermittent faults. Repair any intermittent connections.
  7. Swap injector 4 with another known-good injector (same type). If the code follows the injector, replace the injector. If code stays on cylinder 4, focus on wiring/ECU.
  8. Check continuity from injector connector to the ECM pin and for shorts to power or ground using an ohmmeter. Repair damaged harness sections or connectors.
  9. If wiring and injector check good and supply/driver signals are abnormal, consult wiring diagrams and consider ECM driver fault. Before replacing ECM, verify with an oscilloscope and rule out harness, grounds, and connectors.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform a test drive and re-scan to confirm the fault is resolved. Re-check for related engine performance issues.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector, wiring abrasion, or pin corrosion at injector 4
  • Open or shorted injector coil (internal failure of injector 4)
  • Intermittent connection (wiggle/heat-related) in harness to cylinder 4
  • ECM driver fault (less common) or a blown fuse supplying injector bank

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P0204 — Cylinder 4 injector circuit malfunction. The powertrain control module has detected an open, short, or abnormal signal in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 4. This may cause a misfire and reduced performance.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1-3 hours
