Causes

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data; record operating conditions when P020C set. Clear codes and road test to see if code returns.
  2. Visual inspection: check connector at cylinder 3 injector, harness chafing, pin corrosion, and engine/ECM grounds. Repair any damage.
  3. Check battery/charging voltage; low voltage can affect injector driver operation.
  4. Measure injector resistance at the connector (engine off) and compare to spec. Note: diesel direct injectors typically have low resistance; consult service data.
  5. Backprobe the injector while cranking/running and use an oscilloscope to view the injector drive waveform and timing; compare to a known-good cylinder or manufacturer reference.
  6. Check fuel rail pressure and high-pressure pump; ensure pressure is within spec and stable under load.
  7. Verify camshaft and crankshaft position sensor signals and correlation. Look for cam/crank timing faults (use scope or diagnostic tool). Repair timing chain/belt or sensors if correlation is off.
  8. Swap the injector from cylinder 3 with another cylinder (if accessible and safe) to see if fault follows the injector — perform only if safe and following fuel system depressurization procedures.
  9. If wiring and injector test good but fault persists, suspect ECM/driver failure. Check for technical bulletins or software updates before replacement. Replace ECM only after confirming all wiring, sensors and injectors are good.
  10. Safety note: when working on high-pressure fuel systems, follow manufacturer procedures for fuel pressure relief and observe proper PPE.
