Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring to cold start injector #2
  • Faulty cold start injector (stuck open, stuck closed, or internal coil failure)
  • Poor connector pin contact, corrosion, or water intrusion
  • Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the cold start injector circuit
  • Faulty ECM / driver transistor in the ECM
  • Incorrect or contaminated fuel supply to the cold start injector

Symptoms

  • Hard starting or extended cranking when engine is cold
  • Rough idle or misfire immediately after a cold start
  • Increased white/black smoke during cold start (depending on fault)
  • Check Engine Light (MIL) with code P0214 stored
  • Cold-start enrichment not operating correctly

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and freeze data to confirm conditions when the fault set (ambient temp, engine temp, crank status).
  • Verify vehicle is in the cold-start condition used when the code was stored (low coolant/air temp).
  • Visually inspect connector and wiring for injector #2 for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals.
  • Check fuses and relays related to cold start injector circuit.
  • Backprobe the injector connector during crank to observe command voltage and ground using a multimeter or scope.
  • Measure coil resistance of the cold start injector and compare to vehicle specification.

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: typically in the range of about 1–20 Ω (check vehicle-specific spec).
  • Activation voltage: ~12 V available to injector; ECM switches ground or supply to pulse the injector during cranking.
  • Drive method: short pulses during cold start enrichment; duration and timing vary by manufacturer.
  • Typical drive current: injector solenoids draw up to a few amps when energized (use a clamp meter for in-circuit check).

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: Park vehicle, set parking brake, wear eye protection. Work in well-ventilated area.
  2. Scan: Retrieve P0214 and any related codes. Record freeze frame and relevant live data (engine temp, RPM, injector status).
  3. Reproduce: Attempt a controlled cold start test to reproduce the fault (only if safe and appropriate).
  4. Visual: Inspect harness, connector, fuse, and relay for the cold start injector circuit. Repair obvious issues first.
  5. Power/ground check: With connector connected, measure battery voltage at the injector power terminal. It should show battery voltage (or switched battery) during cranking if applicable.
  6. Command check: Backprobe the control terminal during cranking. Confirm ECM is commanding the injector (voltage pulse or switched ground).
  7. Resistance test: Disconnect injector and measure coil resistance. If open or far out of spec, replace injector.
  8. Continuity/short test: With power off, check continuity from injector harness to ECM pin and check for shorts to ground or battery.
  9. Bench/functional test: If wiring and command are good, bench-test or swap with a known-good cold start injector (if available) to confirm function.
  10. ECM test: If wiring, power, and injector are good but no command is present, investigate ECM driver output (scope recommended) and consider ECU diagnosis/repair or reflash as per manufacturer guidance.
  11. Repair: Replace failed component(s) (connector, wiring, injector, relay, fuse, ECM) as determined. Clean and secure connectors and apply dielectric grease when appropriate.
  12. Verify: Clear codes and perform multiple cold-start cycles to confirm the malfunction is resolved and code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Disconnected or corroded connector at injector #2
  • Injector coil resistance out of specification (open or short)
  • Power or ground supply missing to the cold start injector circuit
  • Intermittent wiring break or chafed harness near injector
  • Failed cold start relay or related fuse
