Causes

What to check

  • Verify sensor ground continuity to chassis ground
  • Measure the 'C' signal voltage at rest and while moving the pedal — it should vary smoothly with pedal travel
  • Check for diagnostic trouble codes related to other pedal/throttle circuits (P0220–P0230 range, P2138/P2135)

Signal parameters

  • Reference (supply) voltage: nominally ~5 V (verify vehicle-specific spec)
  • Sensor signal 'C' voltage at rest: typically low (approx. 0.5–1.5 V) and increases with pedal travel
  • Sensor signal 'C' voltage at full pedal: typically high (approx. 3.5–4.5 V)
  • Signal should change smoothly and proportionally as pedal moves; no sudden jumps, drops to 0 V, or hard shorts to 5 V
  • Sensor ground continuity: near 0 ohms to chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, record stored codes, freeze-frame data and live pedal/throttle signals (A/B/C). Note if multiple pedal circuits are failed or out of correlation.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the pedal sensor harness and connector for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or physical damage.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (~5 V), sensor ground continuity and signal 'C' voltage at rest.
  4. Slowly depress the pedal while watching the signal 'C' voltage: it should rise smoothly. If it is stuck, jumps, or reads 0 V/5 V, suspect wiring or sensor.
  5. If reference or ground is missing or abnormal, trace and repair the wiring to the ECU ground/reference source before replacing the sensor.
  6. Check continuity and resistance of the signal conductor between the pedal connector and the ECM connector. Repair any opens/shorts. Perform wiggle test for intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, replace the throttle pedal position sensor assembly. Clear codes and retest for proper operation.
  8. If fault persists after sensor replacement and wiring verified, suspect ECM input fault; confirm with ECU bench tests or dealer-level diagnostics before ECU replacement.
  9. After repairs, erase codes, perform a functional test and road test to confirm no recurrence.
