Cooling pump control of the charge air cooler - circuit open

Causes

  • Open or broken wiring in the pump supply or control circuit
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the pump or ECM
  • Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the pump
  • Failed pump motor (open winding)
  • Faulty ECM/PCM driver output
  • Poor ground connection for pump circuit

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)/Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Intercooler/charge-air cooling pump does not run when commanded
  • Higher than normal intake air temperatures after turbocharging
  • Reduced engine performance or turbo derate in some conditions
  • Possible stored additional codes for boost or temp sensors

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a diagnostic scanner; note whether PCM commands the pump
  • Visually inspect pump, wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion or contamination
  • Check related fuses and relays (pump supply) for continuity and operation
  • Backprobe pump connector while commanding pump ON to verify supply voltage and ground switching
  • Measure resistance of pump motor winding (with connector disconnected)
  • Perform continuity check between pump connector and ECM pins

Signal parameters

  • Ignition ON, pump supply circuit: battery voltage ~12 V (minus small system drop)
  • When PCM commands pump: control output may be switched ground or PWM; voltage at control pin will toggle between near 0 V and battery voltage or be a PWM waveform
  • Open-circuit condition: multimeter shows infinite/OL or very high resistance between pump terminals or between pump positive and ECM control pin
  • Pump motor resistance (typical range): a few ohms to tens of ohms — check manufacturer spec; an open reading indicates a failed motor
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω between pump ground and vehicle chassis/engine ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether PCM commands the pump and under what conditions code set.
  2. Visually inspect pump, harness and connectors for damage, corrosion or coolant contamination. Repair obvious damage.
  3. Check fuses and relays for the pump circuit; replace if blown or malfunctioning.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure pump winding resistance; if open/infinite, replace the pump.
  5. Reconnect, backprobe the pump connector. With ignition ON and while commanding the pump ON via scanner, verify battery supply at the power pin and switching at the control pin (or PCM-provided ground).
  6. If supply is present but control is open/inactive, check continuity between the PCM control pin and the pump connector. Repair open wiring or connector faults.
  7. If wiring and pump are good but no proper control signal from PCM, confirm PCM output with scope for PWM/drive waveform. If PCM does not command and wiring is good, consider ECM/PCM fault and follow manufacturer procedures.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, run actuator/test drive to confirm pump operates under expected conditions and code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the cooling pump
  • Open wire or broken conductor in harness between pump and ECM
  • Pump motor internal open-circuit
  • Blown fuse or failed pump relay
  • ECM output transistor failed (less common)
